This 6-week summer program, with an optional 2-week extension in a selected specialization, is designed to offer real-world insight into engineering in the public sector and give students a comprehensive overview of career pathways within public works. The program will expose students to different projects within the Public Works Department. The intern will mainly focus on Capital Projects and lightly support the Transportation Engineering Division.The Job DescriptionClick hereto access the complete classification description, including the experience, education, and physical and mental requirements for the job.THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate possesses excellent organizational skills, is self-motivated and highly adaptable, and works well with others. They are detail-oriented, exercise independent judgment, and have a knack for resolving routine problems. With the ability to work within deadlines and handle multiple tasks simultaneously, this candidate also demonstrates strong communication skills.YOU WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TOAssist with reviewing and interpreting engineering plans, City Standards, and Municipal Codes.Participate in the design and review process for Land Development entitlements.Conduct field visits to active construction sites to observe inspections, assist in preparing punch lists, and attend pre-construction meetings (work boots required, will not be provided by City).Collaborate with team members on projects such as pavement rehabilitation, traffic signal modification plans, and sidewalk repair programs.Shadow experienced city staff across various divisions, including Capital Projects, Land Development, Maintenance and Operations, and Transportation and Traffic.Provide counter assistance and support to developers, business owners, and residents for permits and agreements with the Land Development DivisionMinimum And Desirable QualificationsA typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D.equivalent; and be currently enrolled in a college Bachelor's Degree level program.Who We AreThe Public Works department is responsible for public works administration, city engineering, maintenance of public facilities located within the street right-of-way, design and construction of City-built capital improvements, and administration of traffic facilities, providing electric service to new development in residential, commercial, and industrial areas, and related activities.
