Position Type: Support Staff/Special Education Assistant - Life Skills Date Posted: 5/27/2026 Location: Highland Forest Elementary Date Available: 2026-2027 School Year Closing Date: Until Filled EAST CENTRAL INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT Job Announcement Special Education Life Skills Instructional Assistant/Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) The position of a Special Education Life Skills Instructional Assistant/Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) will be available at East Central ISD for the 2026-2027 school year. PRIMARY PURPOSE: Help meet physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities inside and outside the classroom. Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP), including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under the general supervision of a principal and immediate direction of the certified teacher. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Work directly with students in the ECSE pre-kindergarten classrooms.Support instruction to students under the direction of the teacher; work with individual students or small groups.Assist teacher in preparing instructional material and classroom displays.Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom.Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.Help teachers keep administrative records and prepare required reports.Conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher; work with individual students or small groups.Help supervise students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.Keep teachers informed of the unique needs of individual students.Coordinate with the classroom teacher(s) to identify techniques and materials appropriate for use with each child.Keep detailed records of time and effort with each child.Assist teachers in program development and in preparation/acquisition of materials.Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.Assist students, when necessary, in classroom settings outside the ECSE classroom.Attend to the physical needs of students when necessary, including assistance with feeding, toileting needs, dressing and other functional needs.Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibilities and requirements of the supplemental position and its affiliated Pre-Kindergarten program.Maintain confidentiality consistent with federal, state and local requirements. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Certification: High school diploma or GED Must have one of the following:48 college hours with some emphasis on child growth or development or related areaTreasuring our Paraprofessionals certificate (must be obtained prior to employment; applicant is responsible for all associated costs) Valid Texas educational aide certificate Special Knowledge/Skills: Demonstrate strong organizational, communication, collaborative, and interpersonal skills Must perform duties with a minimum supervision Ability to communicate, verbally & in written communication Experience: Some experience working with children EQUIPMENT USED: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; other specialized and adaptive equipment used by students WORKING CONDITIONS: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions. Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. Frequent walking and reaching. Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning for students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint, assist non-ambulatory students. Work inside and outside; exposure to noise. Exposure to biological hazards.
