Reporting to the diagnostics group leader, the candidate will perform duties of an Engineer for the maintenance, upgrade, and testing, of diagnostics sub-systems in support of NSLS‑II accelerator operations. This position will require close interaction with technicians, engineers and scientific staff. A main task will be to maintain the Beam Position Monitor (BPM) system, as well as providing support for various Diagnostics sub-systems, and special projects including development of next generation diagnostics systems, critical to accelerator operations, and will require ability to identify modes of failure and mitigate corrective action. Tasking will also include provision of engineering support for firmware, software and hardware development, as well as supporting work for others initiatives.\n\nEssential Duties and Responsibilities\n\nProvide engineering support for all aspects of accelerator beam position monitors and other beam diagnostics instrumentation\n\nWork with high level software programmers to develop support code and applications\n\nInterface with technical experts from other groups to facilitate operations\n\nWork with other engineers and technicians to achieve group goals\n\nDebug and maintain the repair of existing hardware\n\nWork planning in preparation for scheduled maintenance and shut-down activities\n\nMaintain and implement safety practices and procedures applicable to daily activities\n\nRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities\n\nBSEE in Electrical Engineering\n\nMinimum of 7 years experience with design, fabrication, integration, and implementation of electronics systems\n\nExperience with FPGA firmware, development, VHDL or Verilog\n\nKnowledge of at least one higher level programming language (Python, C++, Matlab, etc)\n\nWorking knowledge for design and implementation of digital and analog circuits\n\nUse of test and measurement equipment, including oscilloscope, network, spectrum and logic analyzers, signal generators, AWG\n\nMust be able to work from schematics, diagrams, written procedures, spreadsheets, controls interface documents\n\nHands‑on troubleshooting skills\n\nExperience processing test records and inspection reports\n\nMust be willing to accommodate the operational requirements of the division including response to calls off‑hours to support accelerator facility 24/7\n\nPreferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities\n\nMasters of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE)\n\nMinimum of 10 years experience with design, fabrication, integration, and implementation of electronics systems\n\nAble to use Xilinx ISE, Xilinx Vivado, Altera Quartus, or similar tool suites\n\nAbility to develop sub-system test strategies and system readiness procedures\n\nKnowledge of PLC based sub-systems applications\n\nExperience using PADS PCB layout, PADS Logic and dxDesigner schematic capture, OrCAD capture, p-Spice A/D, LabView, Visio, as well as Autodesk products\n\nExperience using FPGA IP cores\n\nXilinx ZYNQ experience\n\nSome knowledge of Fiber Optic data transceivers\n\nSome knowledge of serial device communication (RS-232, RS-485, ModBus)\n\nSome knowledge of GPIB communication\n\nComfortable with LINUX/UNIX\n\nFamiliarity with the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control (EPICS) software\n\nFamiliarity with CS-Studio/Phoebus control system studio\n\nFamiliarity with revision control\n\nEnvironmental, Health & Safety Requirements\n\nMust be safety-conscious and able to follow detailed written procedures\n\nLifting up to 30 pounds\n\nContinuous walking/standing\n\nClimb a ladder and work at heights up to 10 feet\n\nOther Information\n\nThis is an onsite position.\n\nThe candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.\n\nBrookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $113,050.00 - $163,617.00 per year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.
