TL;DR - Why This Role MattersWe’re hiring a Software Engineer to own and evolve Scribe’s billing platform. This system sits at the center of how Scribe makes money, powering revenue across 5M+ users and 600K+ organizations.You'll work on a small, focused billing team. The work is scoped but consequential. Billing code needs to be correct, not just functional and you'll develop the habits and domain knowledge to know the difference.This is a role for an engineer who wants to work on financially critical infrastructure, grow fast, and take real ownership of what they ship.About The RoleYou'll be joining a team in an active build phase, we're hardening existing workflows, scaling enterprise invoicing, and migrating billing infrastructure. There's real work to own, and it matters.You won't be handed fully solved problems, but you also won't be navigating ambiguity alone. Your job is to execute well, ask good questions, and raise the bar on what "done" means in a financial system.Over time, as you develop billing expertise, your scope will expand into adjacent systems like entitlements, reporting, and broader monetization infrastructure.Our stack includes Django, DRF, Celery, PostgreSQL, Stripe, and Next.js. This is primarily a backend role, but you'll move across the stack when needed.What You’ll DoImplement and maintain Scribe’s billing and subscription workflows, including invoicing, plan changes, renewals, and payment recoveryBuild and improve reconciliation processes that Finance and leadership rely onWork on event-driven systems that remain correct under retries, partial outages, and concurrent writesContribute to self-serve and enterprise billing flows, including customer-facing UI and internal toolingDevelop and maintain test coverage for financially sensitive codeSurface edge cases and failure modes before they reach productionYou Could Be a Great Fit IfYou have 2-4 years of software engineering experienceYou write code that is correct by construction, you think about edge cases and not just the happy pathYou ask clarifying questions before writing code, and communicate blockers earlyYou take ownership of the work you ship, you don’t close a ticket without verifying it’s rightYou are a strong backend engineer, ideally in PythonYou are curious about how financial systems work and motivated to understand the domain deeplyYou operate well with clear direction and are ready to grow into more autonomy over timeBonusFamiliarity with Stripe or similar payment platformsExperience with Django, Celery or PostgreSQL in a production environmentExposure to enterprise workflows or financial reporting systemsLocationHybrid: Our HQ is in San Francisco, California.
