Job DescriptionDescription:This full time, year-round position is responsible for coordinating, supervising and implementing procedures, policies and activities supporting the natural science instructional laboratory program, as well as preparing and maintaining instructional labs to ensure experiments/exercises are performed efficiently, properly and safely.ResponsibilitiesPrimary DutiesDepartment of Chemistry and BiochemistryPrepare and set out chemical reagents, equipment and supplies for every lab section in chemistry and biochemistry. Monitor throughout the week, disassemble and shelve materials at end of lab.Maintain small instrumentation and troubleshoot problems. Perform minor repairs when needed, and arrange for major equipment service.Maintain order and cleanliness of lab spaces. Encourage faculty and students to do so as well. Safely discard used solutions and cultures.Develop and maintain an inventory system (Microsoft Excel) for all chemicals in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.Maintain an adequate stock of all chemicals and related laboratory supplies.Competitively bid large purchases, place orders, inventory and distribute new supplies, handle returns, and interact with sales representatives and vendorsMaintain well-functioning work study program; assign tasks and monitor progress. Complete required materials for online applications, recruit and interview students, submit paperwork for hires, and submit time sheets.Maintain consistent and reliable attendance.Departments/Programs of the Natural Sciences (Chemistry, Biology and Nutrition)Develop and maintain a system for complying with all regulation regarding the safe labeling, storing, tracking and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials used throughout the natural sciences laboratory program, in conjunction with the Biological Sciences Lab Coordinator. Campus Administrator privileges for the SDS system have been granted so that as new chemicals are purchased or old ones discarded, they can be automatically added or removed from the SDS management system.Review and update inventory across the Programs of the Natural Sciences each summer.Work closely with Campus Compliance Coordinator to insure compliance with all applicable federal regulations for the natural sciences labs. Conduct weekly safety inspections of natural science laboratories, in conjunction with the Biological Sciences Lab Coordinator, in accordance with federal regulations. Report concerns and issues to the department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at department meetings.Oversee animal facility and greenhouse during the summer months.Serve as liaison with Operations on work requests within lab spaces in Kline/Jordan and coordinate with contractor personnel on hood operations and safety certifications.Provide general assistance and technical support for Biological Sciences Lab Coordinator.School of Science, Engineering and HealthServe as Chemical Hygiene Officer and in that capacity provide support and advice to all lab managers, engineering assistants and paraprofessionals in regards to chemical safety. Annually review the Chemical Hygiene Plan and edit as required. Attend regular training necessary for this position.Serve as the designated custodian of the college's alcohol license in accordance with state and federal regulations.Campus WideServe as campus Radiation Safety Officer and Mercury Spill Clean-up designee. Attend regular training necessary for these positions.Serve on College Safety Committee. Provide technical advice for hazardous material incidents anywhere on campus.Serve on College Compliance Committee. Work with Campus Compliance Coordinator on broader campus-wide issues and policies.Secondary DutiesMaintain budgetary restrictions for lab equipment and supplies.Conduct training of faculty, staff and students on safety and hazardous waste handling.Other duties as assigned.QualificationsEducation RequiredBachelor's Degree in Chemistry or BiochemistryEducation PreferredMaster's DegreeExperience RequiredNoneExperience Preferred1 year lab work experience; Hazardous materials trainingSkills, Characteristics Required• Ability to prepare chemical solutions properly, make dilutions, prepare media, culture organisms, and make other lab preparations unsupervised.• Knowledge of federal and state safety regulations, procedures, and practices and the ability to apply these procedures and policies correctly.• Skill in the use and day-to-day maintenance of simple laboratory instrumentation, including but not limited to pH meters, balances, microscopes, autoclaves, fume hoods, spectrophotometers, etc.• Ability to use software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Internet browsers, and inventory control programs as well as specific college packages used for purchasing, budgeting and hiring.• Strong interpersonal and communication skills needed to interact daily with faculty, students, vendors, and co-workers.Special Working ConditionsLight lifting (regularly 25-30 lbs., occasionally 50 lbs.), working long periods of time standing, sitting, stooping or performing repetitive motions.
