Credit Underwriting Manager

CAN Capital is seeking a Credit Underwriting Manager to join our team!The Manager of Credit Underwriting is responsible for leading the daily operations, performance, quality, and operational execution of the Credit Underwriting department. This role leads a team of commercial underwriters while balancing production expectations, customer experience, portfolio quality, and risk mitigation.The ideal candidate is an experienced commercial credit professional and people leader who can effectively manage underwriting operations in a fast-paced environment while developing high-performing teams, strengthening underwriting quality, driving process improvements, and partnering cross-functionally throughout the organization.This role plays a critical part in supporting the organization’s growth strategy by ensuring sound credit decisions, maintaining operational efficiency, and fostering a strong underwriting culture centered around accountability, consistency, collaboration, and customer experience.Responsibilities:Lead, coach, and develop a team of commercial underwriters through consistent feedback, mentorship, and performance managementFoster a positive, collaborative, and accountable team culture focused on both performance and employee engagementConduct regular coaching sessions, performance reviews, and developmental discussions with underwriting staffRecruit, interview, onboard, and train new underwriting team membersOversee day-to-day underwriting operations, workflow distribution, and submission pipeline managementMonitor underwriting queues to ensure balanced workload allocation and timely movement of files through the processDrive departmental performance against Service Level Agreements (SLAs), productivity expectations, and quality standardsIdentify operational bottlenecks and implement process improvements to improve efficiency and consistencyEnsure underwriting decisions are well-documented, supported, and aligned with company credit policyServe as an escalation point for complex underwriting scenarios, exception requests, and elevated-risk transactionsEnsure consistent application of underwriting guidelines, lending policies, and risk frameworksBalance customer experience and growth initiatives with sound portfolio risk managementEnsure underwriting staff remain informed of current credit policy updates, procedural changes, and risk trendsDevelop and maintain underwriting procedures, job aids, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)Collaborate with Sales, Operations, Risk, Technology, and Executive Leadership to support organizational goalsParticipate in strategic discussions surrounding credit policy, operational scalability, fraud prevention, and customer experienceSupport organizational initiatives related to automation, efficiency, and portfolio quality improvementsEnsure adherence to company policies, underwriting authority levels, and applicable regulatory requirementsSupport internal audits, quality reviews, and compliance initiativesPerform additional duties, responsibilities, and special projects as assigned or deemed appropriate by the organizationQualifications:2+ years of leadership or people management experience within underwriting, credit, or financial services5+ years of commercial underwriting or business lending experienceBachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Accounting, Economics, or related field preferredEquivalent relevant industry experience may be considered in lieu of degree requirementsStrong understanding of commercial lending, cash flow analysis, bank statement analysis, fraud prevention, and risk-based underwritingExperience reviewing, evaluating and making risk based decisions within an approved authority matrix requiredExperience operating in a fast-paced production environment with defined SLA expectationsExperience partnering cross-functionally with Sales, Operations, Risk, and Technology teamsPreferred Experience:Experience within fintech, small business lending, MCA, or alternative commercial finance environmentsExperience reviewing and managing higher exposure small business credit transactions and commercial funding ranges, including large funding requests (e.g. 1mil+)Experience leading operational or process improvement initiativesExperience utilizing Salesforce or comparable CRM/workflow management systems within a lending or financial services environmentSkills & Competencies:Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skillsAbility to make sound risk-based decisions while balancing customer experience and operational objectivesStrong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneouslyExpert communication, presentation, and negotiation skills requiredStrong leadership presence and ability to influence across departmentsAbility to analyze operational performance metrics and identify actionable insightsHigh attention to detail and strong documentation standardsProficiency in Microsoft Office and underwriting/workflow systems
