FLSA: No Exempt.\r\nPipe layers are responsible for assisting the utility crew's foreman, topman, and operators with installing new or modifying existing sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water utilities. Pipe layers will work in excavated trenches on a daily basis, assist with pipe/transit lasers and shooting grade, assemble different fittings, ensure pipe is installed at the correct elevation/slope, fine grade pipe bedding in the trench, and assist with backfill using jumping jacks/plate compactors.\r\nRequirements and Qualifications Core Duties & Responsibilities Assist in laying new or modifying existing sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water utilities.\r\nWork safely in trenches and confined spaces installing or modifying utilities—proper shoring, excavations, and confined space equipment provided by JHL.\r\nUse small tools (impact drills, hammer drills, core drills, demo saws, pipe wrenches, jumping jacks, plate compactors) to assemble utility fittings and perform miscellaneous tasks related to the utility scope of work.\r\nAssist in miscellaneous concrete work related to utilities (manhole bases, inlets, patching, core drilling, head walls, toe walls).\r\nAssist topman/foreman in shooting grade using transit/pipe lasers to obtain correct elevations and percent of fall for all utilities.\r\nFine-grade pipe bedding in trenches to achieve correct elevations and percent of fall for utility installations.\r\nAssist project crew with asphalt patching for utility installations in street cuts.\r\nOperate small equipment as needed (skidsteers and trench compactors).\r\nPerform miscellaneous labor regarding the utility scope of work (prepare trench boxes, lay out materials, etc.).\r\nWear proper PPE daily (hard hat, vest, safety glasses, closed-toe boots); all PPE provided by JHL.\r\nWear task-specific PPE as required (face shield, chainsaw chaps, respirators, gloves, etc.).\r\nEducation & Experience High school diploma or GED preferred.\r\n2-4 years of experience laying sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water utilities.\r\nExperience using trench safety and shoring.\r\nExperience using small tools and equipment.\r\nKnowledge, Skills & Abilities Math skills related to shooting correct elevations and percentage of fall.\r\nAbility to read and understand survey staking.\r\nPhysical Requirements Must remain in standing or kneeling position: 90% of work time.\r\nMust speak, write, and comprehend English: 10% of work time.\r\nMust lift tools and supplies up to 50 lbs: 40% of work time.\r\nMust hear clearly: 100% of work time.\r\nMust stoop, kneel, bend, and reach: 100% of work time.\r\nMust have dexterity to manipulate tools and materials: 100% of work time.\r\nMust have clear vision or wear contacts/glasses if vision is obscured: 100% of work time.\r\nTotal Compensation Annual discretionary bonus—eligible for participation.\r\nOvertime—yes.\r\nPaid Time Off—yes, 40 hours per year after 90 days of employment.\r\n401(k)—yes, eligible after 6 months of employment.\r\nHealth insurance—yes, eligible the month following your first 30 days of employment.\r\nShort-term disability—yes, eligible the month following your first 30 days of employment.\r\nLong-term disability—yes, eligible the month following your first 30 days of employment.\r\nLife insurance—$20,000 per employee, eligible after first year of employment; additional voluntary life insurance available at that time.\r\nWork Environment and Travel Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather (snow, rain, heat); loud noise; diesel fumes; grease; and oil smells.\r\nDaily travel as business requires during scheduled work hours.\r\nDisclaimer This job description is a summary and is not meant to cover or include all tasks, duties, or responsibilities that the employee may be required to perform.
