DescriptionPerforms sewer line cleaning for the City sewers, responding to emergency sewer stoppages at citizen’s properties. Assisting the Utility Inspector with citizen’s request, Public Works, Plumbers and contractors to help locate sewer lines, dye testing, smoke testing and CCTV inspections.Examples of DutiesOperating the Vactor and the Jet trucks and equipment during sewer line cleaning, sewer stoppages and sewer backups. Requires a Commercial Driver’s Class B License with Tank endorsement.Maintaining documentation records for line cleaning and sewer stoppages using the City GIS.Performing routine maintenance work on the Vactor and Jet trucks as well as assisting with pump station maintenance when needed.Smoke and dye testing sewer lines.Assisting the Utility Inspector with CCTV work using the crawler camera or the push camera.Typical QualificationsMinimum Education and Experience:Ability to read, write and understand oral/written instructions in English and at least 6 months experience in sewer related position. Ability to read sewer maps and GIS.High school diploma preferred.Maintenance skills on pumps a plus. Licenses And/or CertificationsCommercial Driver’s License B with Tank endorsement.VA DOT work zone traffic control certification within six months of hire.Knowledge:Knowledge of equipment used in assigned unitKnowledge of work methods and techniquesMust have knowledge of traffic safety, as most work will be performed in the public right-of-way.Skills:Skill in driving vehicles and operating equipment. Basic computer skillsAbilities: Requires the ability to lift and move heavy objects, i.e. removing and replacing manhole lids, removing and connecting pipe sections to and from the Vactor suction line.The ability to work independently and as a team with limited supervision.Must be able to communicate problems as maintenance is performed. Other requirements:Must be available to work on-call on a rotating basis, to respond to emergencies such as sewer stoppages and or minor repairs after regular work hours.Supplemental InformationWork EnvironmentWorker is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme noise, odors, heights, dust, fumes, and hazardous materials such as oil, coolants, gasoline, hydraulic fluid, and raw sewage. Essential Physical ActivitiesStooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception.
