Operations Specialist
Do Epic ScienceTAE is the world's first private fusion energy company, founded in 1998 to commercialize the cleanest, safest, most affordable, and sustainable form of carbon-free power. We are applying science and engineering to design transformational technologies. Whether it's harnessing fusion through the science of stars, making exponential leaps in power efficiency, or innovating medical care with a novel cancer treatment: We're turning the promise of science into reality. We're looking for candidates who are passionate about realizing our mission: A future where all people have affordable access to reliable, abundant, and environmentally friendly fusion-generated electricity.About The RoleThe Operations Specialist is a member of in the machine Operations Group, which focuses on operating TAE's experimental facilities to execute experiments related to Nuclear Fusion. The group is part of the Experiment section of the C-2W program, in TAE's Fusion division, and the Operation Specialist is responsible for operating, testing, troubleshooting, documenting, and maintaining Tri Alpha Energy's C-2W experimental plasma fusion test machine, associated subsystems, test stands and additional equipment. Several operators who are experts who specialize in running large-scale, complex experimental devices, make up the Operations group. In addition to machine operations, the Operations Specialist also provides project support for the Physics and Engineering Departments. This is an entry or mid-level position in machine operations involving plasma fusion research. The candidate will act as the machine Operator In Charge (OIC) who configures the machine and executes plasma physics related experiments. The OIC will apply their specialized training and expert understanding of the machine and subsystems to provide expert guidance to the physicists and engineers in conducting their research experiments. The OIC must be capable of multi-tasking while paying meticulous attention to details regarding the changing status and configuration of the machine. The ability to communicate detailed complex information clearly and effectively, verbally, by radio, using Zoom or by phone, with the experimenters and system support experts, is a critical job function. The OIC is also responsible for operating the Emergency Safety System, used for protecting personnel and equipment, while following and applying safe work practices in an industrial environment.Job responsibilities will be about 70% Operations, and 30% project work with other related work units, as appropriate for the skill sets and interests of the Operations Specialist, as well as the needs of TAE.The position may also involve some shift work on evenings and weekends, with the possibility of 24/7 on-call, off-hour support, in the future.About YouThe ideal candidate will have "some" knowledge of and experience with operating, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining complex technical systems, in a manner that is safe to personnel and the environment. An incomplete list of job-related Technical Systems and Safety Hazards are indicated below:Technical SystemsPlasma GeneratorsIon and/or Electron SourcesParticle AcceleratorsHigh Voltage Electronics (above 10 kV)Magnets (including superconducting electromagnets)Beam Transport SystemsPulsed Power SystemsRF SystemsCryogenics and Cryogenic SystemsVacuum Systems (including ultrahigh vacuum)Laser SystemsOptical Systems (including magneto-optics, and RF optics)Power SuppliesFluid, Gas, and Steam SystemsControl Systems and Control InfrastructureDiagnostic SystemsClean RoomsPersonnel Safety and Machine Protection HazardsElectricalMechanicalChemicalRadiationFireLasersLow Oxygen EnvironmentsConfined SpacesLock Out Tag Out (LOTO)Energy ControlsArea Access Safety SystemsInterlocksHazmatExperience working with one of the following groups:Operations groupProject teamWork unitTechnical support staffUnderstanding and application of tools and test equipment such as:Voltmeters, O-scopes, Spectrum AnalyzersPressure, Temperature, Magnetic, and Motion measurement systems.Hand ToolsPower ToolsSolderingAssemblyInstallationMaintenanceRepairsTroubleshootingSoftware Knowledge and Skills:MS Office ApplicationsCustom Machine Control Systems interfacesLabViewEPICSTrend/Archive Data charts/graphsAlarms and Alarm handler softwareData Analysis softwareExperience with various Programming Languages/Scripts/Macros as well as software such as Python, Matlab or IDL is also useful.Other Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:TAE requires highly motivated individuals who will take the initiative to help solve machine related problems, assist experimenters, and address operational and safety issues proactively. As an OIC, you must be able to "take charge" of the situation, and work with minimal supervision.EducationB.S.
