The role combines materials engineering, manufacturing support, laboratory activities, supplier qualification, failure analysis, and process improvement in an aerospace, defense, or high-reliability manufacturing environment.## Key Responsibilities* Define engineering requirements for parts, materials, processes, manufacturing technologies, machinery, tools, and automation systems.* Qualify new materials, parts, and processes against applicable requirements.* Manage and support supplier qualification test and audit programs.* Support engineering design reviews and failure analyses for metallic parts and processes.* Assist with supplier qualification activities and respond to routine supplier technical inquiries.* Escalate complex supplier or production issues to senior Materials and Process Engineers.* Analyze tool, material, part, and process performance and identify causes of failures.* Recommend corrective actions for senior engineering review.* Coordinate and support laboratory activities, including metallography, hardness, tensile testing, and NDT/NDI.* Compile test data for interpretation and disposition.* Apply project management practices to meet cost, technical, and schedule requirements.* Incorporate EHS, LEAN, and Quality principles into materials/process work, laboratory activities, and procedures.* Support creation and revision of material and process specifications, work instructions, and test plans.* Ensure documentation aligns with Northrop Grumman and industry requirements.* Support investigations of non-conformances and supplier deviations.* Collect evidence, perform basic root-cause analysis, and draft corrective action recommendations.* Maintain engineering records, including test reports and engineering orders.* Support configuration control and design reviews.* Communicate technical findings to cross-functional teams and stakeholders.* Interact with manufacturing floors, supplier facilities, and testing laboratories.* Travel occasionally to supplier sites, test facilities, and other Northrop Grumman locations.* Comply with Northrop Grumman security, health, and safety policies.## Required Qualifications – Principal Level* 5 years of engineering experience with a Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline, preferably Materials Science and Engineering; **or*** 3 years of Materials Science and Engineering experience with a Master's degree; **or*** 1 year of relevant experience with a PhD.* Engineering experience in aerospace, defense, or high-reliability manufacturing environments.* Practical knowledge of metallurgy for ferrous and nonferrous alloys.* Knowledge of heat treatment basics and corrosion/fatigue fundamentals.* Knowledge of common materials testing methods.* Hands-on experience with metallographic sample preparation and basic laboratory techniques, including cutting, polishing, etching, and hardness testing.* 2+ years of experience with manufacturing processes such as machining, forging, forming, fastening, welding/brazing, and plating/coating.* Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications related to metallic materials and processing.* Active U.S. Government Secret Clearance.* Ability to work full-time onsite in Woodland Hills.## Required Qualifications – Sr. Principal Level* 8 years of engineering experience with a Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline, preferably Materials Science and Engineering;
