General Statement of Duties The successful candidate will support a comprehensive secondary school counseling program that promotes students' academic, career, and personal/social development through both individual and group services. As a student advocate and a member of the educational team, the counselor will take a proactive role in supporting, influencing, and enhancing student learning. Responsibilities include consulting and collaborating with teachers, administrators, support staff, families, and community resource partners; coordinating appropriate services for students; and serving as a liaison between the school, community agencies, and post-secondary opportunities. This is a 239-Days School Counseling assignment.Essential Duties The physical demands of this assignment include the ability to sit and stand for extended periods and the ability to lift and move items weighing up to 25 pounds. Counsels students on personal problems, careers, peer relationships, and attendance problemsConducts small and large group guidance sessionsMaintains and updates student cumulative foldersCommunicates with parents and agency representatives concerning student problemsDesigns and implements behavior modification programs for studentsCoordinates teacher and parent conferences as neededInterprets test data and student records for parents and teachersPlays a major role in Child Study activitiesDaily attendanceEngaged and on taskPerforms other duties as requiredMust have a thorough knowledge of the curriculum, instruction, and counseling/guidance theory and practice. Counseling skills must include problem identification/analysis skills and basic therapy resolution. Communication skills, both oral and written, must be highly developed to meet the diverse needs of the clientele, professional staff, and other community agencies. Must be able to organize and carry out student activity programs; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Minimum Qualifications Applicant must have a post-graduate certification/licensure/endorsement in secondary school counseling by the Virginia Department of Education. Additional Information This position is for the 2026-2027 school year with an July 20, 2026 start date.Minimum annual starting salary based on 2025-26 SY Rates*: $69,419 Master's degree *The annual salary stated in this posting is based on the 2025-2026 adopted financial plan. The annual salary for the coming school year will be determined once the 2026-2027 school year financial plan is approved and adopted in the Spring of 2026.
