The driver is responsible for the timely and safe transportation of residents, residents’ friends and family, and staff to various individual and group activities. This position coordinates schedules, picks up residents, and handles other work responsibilities with the other drivers to ensure residents are picked up in a timely manner and that the vehicles are kept clean. The driver follows all local and state laws, maintains a safe and courteous manner, and drives at a safe speed. Essential Functions Drives scheduled trips for residents and team members to and from Metro in a timely manner. Drives residents to and from medical appointments, grocery store trips, special events, and throughout various locations on campus. Assists residents on and off vehicles and always ensures resident and team member safety. Maintains and keeps appropriate transportation records to include trip logs, resident signature slips, gas and mileage logs, number of riders. Ensures vehicles are in good working order by filling vehicles with gas, oil, etc. as needed; check and maintain fluid levels and tire pressure daily. Performs routine circle check for any vehicle problems and maintenance needs promptly to supervisor. Follows organization vehicle rules & regulations and ensures safety by requiring seat belts for passengers & driver. Ensures resident safety by assisting residents boarding the vehicles, operating the wheelchair lift, and locking wheelchairs in place or stowing securely. Assumes responsibility for passengers on trips, checks names of passengers; gives clear instructions about meeting places & times; and ensures that everyone is on the return trip. Notifies supervisor of any excessive delay in ability to pick up residents; late return; health related problems or falls on trips; and problems with vehicles. Observes all administrative rules and regulations, practices good safety measures, and always complies with security regulations. Uses all safety equipment required in the performance of work assignments. Maintains a neat and acceptable appearance while wearing an organization issued uniform. Maintains a professional and courteous manner while performing duties off campus grounds as well as while on campus. Assists in orienting residents, staff and guests to the transportation schedule, Metro pick-up and departure points and times, and best routes to get to area locations. Maintains a working knowledge of all department policies and procedures. Education and Experience High school diploma or GED with a minimum of five (5) years of driving experience. Commercial License (CDL) with passenger endorsement required. Minimum of 1 year driving within a Senior Living residential or Health Care facility preferred. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Must have a valid Maryland Driver’s License with no more than 2 points upon hire, verified by a certified copy of the driving record. After employment, no more than 3 points allowed. Knowledge of operating vehicles equipped with wheelchair ramps and lifts. Must be knowledgeable of driving safety and road rules for the Maryland/DC metropolitan area. Able to stoop, bend, stand, stretch, and squat when loading residents and other items. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and push wheelchairs with residents weighing up to 250 pounds. May be exposed to the elements (rain, snow, cold, heat) for periods of time. May be exposed to any of the following: communicable diseases, HIV and Hepatitis B viruses, offensive odors, difficult behavior, chemicals and fumes from the vehicles and other vehicles on the road. May have to deal with vehicle malfunctions and road hazards Pay Rate: $22.88 per hour
