We’re especially looking for college students who enjoy teaching, mentoring, and sharing their love of chess, but anyone passionate about chess and working with kids is welcome to apply. As an after school chess instructor, you’ll help students build critical thinking, strategy, and problem-solving skills in a supportive and engaging environment. Our sessions run once a week for 6-12 weeks, with each class lasting one hour. We require a commitment of at least two school semesters.\nWhat We’re Looking For:\nStrong understanding of chess fundamentals (minimum ELO 1000 preferred but not required).\nPassion for teaching and inspiring young minds through chess.\nExcellent communication and classroom management skills.\nAbility to create an inclusive and engaging learning environment.\nReliable transportation and ability to commute to schools in Eugene.\nExperience working with children in group settings (teaching, coaching, tutoring, or mentoring is a plus).\nResponsibilities – After School Chess Instructor:\nLead fun, structured, and educational chess lessons following Checkmate Academy's curriculum guidelines.\nFoster a positive and encouraging atmosphere where students of all skill levels feel supported.\nManage classroom dynamics effectively and ensure an inclusive learning space.\nProvide individualized guidance and support to students as needed.\nServe as an ambassador for Checkmate Academy, maintaining strong relationships with schools and parents.\nAbout Us\nCheckmate Academy helps thousands of students from elementary through middle school build strategic thinking through chess. We operate after-school programs in 100+ schools across California and Massachusetts, including our MarinChess branch - the largest after-school chess provider in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our mission is to make chess accessible to all students while equipping them with valuable life skills like critical thinking, decision-making, and resilience.
