This role ensures database performance, availability, security, and reliability in complex production environments while partnering closely with customers and internal engineering teams.The ideal candidate brings strong SQL expertise, a proactive mindset, and experience supporting large or mission-critical database systems. This is a remote position and requires a dedicated home office, with limited travel as needed.Role DescriptionDesign, build, administer, and support SQL database environments across customer-managed platformsEnsure database performance, availability, reliability, and security in production environmentsMonitor, diagnose, and resolve database performance and stability issuesPerform backup and restore activities, high availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR), and disaster recovery planning and executionOptimize existing environments and contribute to standardization through documentation and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)Participate in and lead managed services projects aligned to customer objectivesEngage directly with customers through incident response, change requests, meetings, and status updatesTrack and document work accurately in the PSA system, including weekly timesheet submissionSupport audits, compliance efforts, and on-call rotations as requiredCollaborate with senior engineers on complex escalations and solution designBehaviors and CompetenciesCommunication: Can effectively communicate complex ideas and information, and can adapt communication style to the audience.Time Management: Can generally use time effectively and is working towards improving task prioritization and deadline management.Organization: Can prioritize daily tasks, manage personal workflow, and utilize basic tools to keep track of responsibilities.Interpersonal Skills: Can communicate effectively, build relationships, and resolve conflicts with others in moderate situations.Adaptability: Can adjust to changes in the work environment, manage multiple tasks, and effectively handle uncertainty.Judgment: Can evaluate situations, identify patterns or implications, and decide on an appropriate course of action based on analysis and experience.Initiative: Can identify opportunities for improvement, propose solutions, and take action without explicit instructions.Collaboration: Can actively participate in team discussions, respect differing opinions, and collaborate with others to achieve common goals.Digital Acumen: Can identify opportunities to use digital tools for improvement and propose digital solutions.Willingness to Learn: Can actively seek out learning opportunities but may need guidance to apply new knowledge or skills effectively.Technical Troubleshooting: Can identify complex technical issues, propose solutions, and take action to resolve them without explicit instructions.Skill Level RequirementsDeep expertise with Microsoft SQL Server (on-premises and/or cloud-based)Strong knowledge of:Backup and restore strategiesHigh availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR)Performance tuning and optimizationExperience supporting large or complex database environmentsExposure to the Azure cloud platformSQL Server administration and troubleshootingDatabase performance monitoring and tuningHA/DR implementations and recovery planningExperience with version control tools (Git, Azure DevOps, or similar)Strong documentation and change control disciplineAbility to effectively communicate complex ideas and adapt communication style to the audienceStrong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage workloadsAbility to build relationships, collaborate effectively, and contribute to team-based problem solvingAdaptability to changing priorities, environments, and customer needsStrong judgment, initiative, and problem-solving skillsWillingness to learn and apply new technical skills with guidanceStrong technical troubleshooting skills, with the ability to identify complex issues and implement solutions independentlyPreferred Skill Level RequirementsFamiliarity with IT Glue, Autotask, Datto RMM, and documentation toolsExperience with automation or scripting related to database operationsExposure to CI/CD pipelines or database deployment automationCertificationsOne or more database-related certifications, such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator AssociateITIL v3+ certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire)Other RequirementsBachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent hands-on experience3-5 years of experience supporting SQL database environments (managed services experience preferred)Ability to travel up to 10% annuallyParticipation in a rotating on-call schedule for after-hours or holiday supportAvailability for occasional overtime based on customer or business needsAbility to meet utilization targets set by leadershipMust successfully pass a CJIS background check upon hire and annually thereafterThe estimated annual pay range for this position is $110,000 - $140,000 which includes a base salary and bonus. The compensation for this position is dependent on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and market location and, therefore, will vary from individual to individual.
