Assignments and instructions are received from a working supervisor, and work is normally performed under close supervision.\n\nThe day and hours for this position: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm\n\nBargaining Unit: Service Employee's International (SEIU)\n\n**Employee within the department or division shall be given first consideration**\n\n**Posting may close at any time**\nExamples of Work Performed\nClimbs trees, using rope and saddle, up to heights of 80' above the ground from the ground.\nRemoves dead and dangerous trees; grubs and pulls out stumps.\nProvides recommendations for improvements in tree maintenance.\nIdentifies hazardous trees and assists in or performs needed pruning or removal of trees.\nPrunes trees and removes dead and/or broken tree limbs from trees.\nAssists in job site cleanup, chipping brush, and in raking, sweeping, loading debris and logs on trucks.\nOperates tree-related equipment as needed.\nMaintains tree care equipment and tools.\nThese examples are not intended to be all-inclusive.\nOther related duties may be assigned as needed.\nRequirements of Work\nSome knowledge of tree care, of the methods and equipment used in pruning, trimming, topping, spraying and removing trees\nKnowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions and ANZI Z133 standards\nAbility to become a qualified Line Clearance Tree Trimmer\nAbility to climb trees with rope and saddle up to heights of 80 ft. above the ground from the ground\nAbility to start, operate, stop, and carry chainsaws weighing up to 22 lbs. at a height of up to 80 ft. above the ground at a variety of angles and positions while working in a rope and saddle.\nAbility to tolerate equipment and machinery noise with the use of ear plugs or other hearing protection\nAbility to lift 100% of body weight as required to climb trees\nAbility to knot, accurately throw, and climb a half-inch rope up to heights of twenty feet using the foot lock and body thrust method\nAbility to operate a 26\" hand saw.\nAbility to bend, squat, and twist as required to shovel soil from up to three feet below ground level.\nAbility to swing an ax accurately and effectively to chop at ground level.\nAbility to drag, pull, and carry up to 40 pounds of bulky tree debris as far as 50 feet and load same up to heights of eight feet using an ensilage or pitch fork.\nAbility to lift logs weighing up to 150 pounds with assistance of another worker.\nAbility to rake and sweep work site using lawn rake and push broom.\nAbility to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist, including after-hour emergencies\nAbility to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.\nAbility to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.\nPossession of a valid Kansas class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement\nAn employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.\nExperience and Training\nRequired experience and Training\n\nOne year of experience in tree maintenance work.\nAbility to obtain Kansas class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement within 6 months of employment. If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country.\nA valid driver's license.\nMust be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.\nPreferred Experience and Training\n\nKansas class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement\nOne year experience climbing with a rope and saddle.\nPlease note that this position is part of a random drug testing pool, and employees are subject to random drug testing in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.\n\nOffers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, including drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.\n\nStarting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.\n\nApplicants have rights under Federal Employment Laws.
