The team provides managed database platforms that support Affirm services across relational databases, distributed SQL, DynamoDB, and Redis.This role focuses on setting technical strategy, designing highly scalable datastore platforms, improving database reliability and performance, and developing self-service infrastructure for managing databases at scale. The engineer will work closely with product, infrastructure, analytics, and Site Reliability Engineering teams to deliver sustainable and reliable storage solutions.Key ResponsibilitiesSet the technical strategy for the team over a year-long planning horizon and connect it to critical business-impacting projects.Collaborate closely with product, infrastructure, and Site Reliability Engineering teams.Design and build components of scalable datastore platforms.Develop solutions supporting multi-region, horizontally scalable, globally available, and high-performance datastore environments.Build control planes for managing and providing self-service access to hundreds of databases.Automate schema and data migrations, disaster recovery, sharding, and performance tuning.Collaborate across the product development lifecycle to design and deliver database solutions.Partner with product management, design, and analytics teams to evaluate technical sustainability, risks, and trade-offs.Define and advocate for technical solutions and operational processes that increase team effectiveness.Own database operations and availability through appropriate monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting.Establish code review and system design standards that promote quality and ownership.Share technical knowledge through documentation, writing, and technical presentations.Provide feedback, guidance, and mentorship to engineers on the team.Contribute to the development and operation of mission-critical storage infrastructure.Required Qualifications8+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages such as Python or Kotlin.Extensive experience developing highly available distributed systems.Experience with technologies such as AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.5+ years of hands-on database experience.Deep knowledge of relational and/or distributed SQL databases, including technologies such as:MySQLPostgreSQLTiDBVitessStrong understanding of database fundamentals, including:Schema designQuery optimizationScalingPartitioningShardingPerformance tuningData integrityEfficient data access patternsStrong experience building and operating databases in cloud environments.Experience with database benchmarking, load testing, and capacity planning.Familiarity with connection poolers and database proxies such as ProxySQL, RDS Proxy, and PgBouncer.Experience delivering major system features, components, or functionality deprecations through well-defined
