Mechanical Project Engineer, Design Engineering Quality

DescriptionAre you a talented Mechanical Engineer with a passion for leading teams and delivering large-scale automated fulfillment solutions? We're seeking a driven Senior Mechanical Project Engineer to join our dynamic team, oversee complex projects, and play a pivotal role in transforming the future of Amazon's logistics network.In this role, you will oversee the mechanical design of automated fulfillment center projects, leading cross-functional engineering teams from concept to completion. You will manage multiple projects and engineers, make strategic decisions, coordinate with stakeholders at all levels, and ensure seamless integration with other building systems while developing your team's capabilities.Key Responsibilities:1. Project Leadership and Oversight:Oversee and direct comprehensive layouts for multiple automated material handling system projectsLead the selection and specification of conveyor types, third-party equipment, and systems across projectsManage coordination with electrical, controls, and structural engineering teams to ensure cohesive, integrated designsProvide strategic direction and final approval on mechanical design decisionsAllocate resources and assign projects to engineers based on complexity and development needs2. Stakeholder Management and Project Coordination:Develop and manage mechanical engineering project plans, schedules, deliverables and ways of working across multiple projectsLead coordination with internal and external construction teams to minimize layout conflicts and ensure efficient installationMaintain excellent communication with on-site construction teams, clients, and senior leadershipMake high-level decisions to resolve complex field issues and project challengesBalance competing priorities across multiple projects and stakeholdersEscalate Engineering problems and risks to project leadership and stakeholders appropriately3. Team Development and Technical Leadership:Directly manage and mentor junior engineers, providing guidance on complex technical challenges and leadership skillsOversee the development of new engineers through mentorship programsReview and approve calculations and designsSet technical standards and best practices for the engineering teamLead technical problem-solving for the most complex or novel design challengesBuild team capabilities through training, feedback, and stretch assignmentsConduct performance reviews and provide career development guidance4. Apply now to join our team and play a crucial role in shaping the future of Amazon's fulfillment network.Key job responsibilitiesOversee translation of customer drawings and specifications into fully functional mechanical conveyor systems across multiple projectsLead optimization of mechanical system designs within budget, coordinating across disciplines and managing trade-offsDirect 3D modeling efforts and clash detection management across project portfolioReview and approve 2D customer approval and installation layout drawingsValidate spatial analysis of clearance envelopes, egress pathways, etc. across projectsReview and approve system and component level calculations (throughput, motor power, belt pull, reactive forces to building structure, etc.)Provide direction on engineering of custom parts needed for non-standard design applicationsEnsure safety regulations and ergonomic standards are applied consistently across all projectsReview and approve conveyor manifests with respect to electrical and controls engineering requirementsEnsure all engineering decisions are properly documented through design plans, complete installation files, and engineering instructionsManage and develop new engineers as they grow in their careers.Resolve escalated technical issues from junior engineersTravel to sites as needed to conduct audits, resolve complex issues, and support teamsOversee installation and commissioning activities across multiple projectsDevelop engineering team capabilities and drive continuous improvement initiativesBasic Qualifications5+ years of in material handling equipment (MHE) or automation environments experience, or experience and strong technical background in relevant fields of automated or non-automated material handling equipmentExperience in project management including resource planning, managing schedules, reporting project status and prioritizing tasksExperience in team leadershipExperience in 3D CADExperience with CAD software (AutoCAD, REVIT, BIM 360, etc.)Preferred QualificationsBachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalentExperience leading and influencing your team or organizationExperience communicating clearly and concisely with leadership, stakeholders, and cross-functional teamsExperience leading prioritization of tasks, team scheduling, time management, and meeting deadlinesCan show excellent decision-making capabilities under pressureAbility to think strategically about overall systems and translate into detailed requirements for the teamAmazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.Our inclusive culture empowers Amazonians to deliver the best results for our customers. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
