Sr. Director, Medical Affairs
We are partnering with a global biopharmaceutical company to identify a Senior Director, Medical Affairs, to lead the US Medical strategy within the rare hematology disease area. This is a highly visible leadership opportunity for an experienced Medical Affairs professional who brings strong scientific credibility, strategic leadership, and the ability to influence across a complex, matrixed organization.
The individual in this role will serve as the US medical and scientific lead for the therapeutic area, guiding the development and execution of Medical Affairs strategy, shaping field medical priorities, and partnering closely with Commercial, Market Access, Regulatory, Safety, Scientific Affairs, and Clinical Development. This person will also play an important external role, building trusted relationships with key opinion leaders and representing the organization across the broader medical and scientific community.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the US Medical Affairs team for the assigned disease area, including Medical Directors, Medical Scientists, and Field Medical leadership
Develop and execute annual US Medical plans in alignment with global Medical strategy
Adapt and localize global medical content for the US market
Serve as the lead US scientific and clinical expert within the therapeutic area
Drive the scientific agenda by aligning resources and priorities to the needs of the region
Provide strategic direction, coaching, and support to Field Medical leadership to ensure strong alignment between headquarters strategy and field execution
Oversee the development and execution of MSL field plans, insight generation priorities, and communication flow between field and headquarters teams
Partner cross-functionally with Commercial, Market Access, Regulatory, Safety, and Scientific Affairs to support both patient needs and portfolio objectives
Ensure promotional and scientific materials are medically accurate, balanced, data-driven, and appropriate for the intended audience
Provide medical input into labeling strategy, regulatory plans, evidence generation activities, and publication planning
Represent Medical Affairs in promotional review and other cross-functional governance processes
Build and maintain strong relationships with key thought leaders, healthcare professionals, and relevant external stakeholders
Represent the organization at congresses, advisory boards, scientific meetings, and other external forums
Maintain a strong understanding of disease state, current treatment practices, market dynamics, emerging data, and competitive activity
Communicate unmet medical needs, external insights, and evolving trends to internal stakeholders to help shape strategy
Foster a high-performing, scientifically credible Medical Affairs team and culture
Candidate Profile
MD preferred; PhD, PharmD, or other advanced scientific degree required
7+ years of pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or biotherapeutics industry experience
Prior leadership experience within Medical Affairs, including team leadership and people management
Strong track record of developing and executing Medical Affairs strategy in the US and other key markets
Deep understanding of drug development, including clinical development, regulatory strategy, and lifecycle management
Experience partnering effectively across Commercial, Market Access, Regulatory, and Field Medical functions
Demonstrated success in building and maintaining strong KOL relationships
Ability to operate successfully in a global, matrixed, and fast-paced environment
Strong communication skills, executive presence, and cross-functional leadership capabilities
Therapeutic expertise in hematology, rare disease, or a closely related area is strongly preferred
Willingness to travel up to 30%
