Mission of DepartmentTo support the hospital's overall mission, vision and values, providing diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive health-care patient services within the scope of training and credentialing and under the supervision of a physician. Purpose of PositionThe APP provides age-appropriate medical care at the level of training achieved. Essential FunctionsThe APP: Effectively identifies, evaluates, and addresses disease prevention and health promotion issues of the population in practice while administering quality patient care. Works in an independent and interdependent relationship with members of the medical staff, which allows for consultation, collaboration, or referral. Responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of acute, chronic, and long-term healthcare issues. Educates patients and/or families about preventive care, medical issues, and use of prescribed medical treatments and/or medications. Maintains legible, accurate and confidential medical records. Documents all medical evaluations, diagnoses, procedures, treatments, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations in a timely manner and consistent with regulatory standards. Facilitates evaluation of records by physician(s), peers, and Quality and Standards according to protocols, and receives and implements constructive directives. Analyzes their own clinical practice and performs practice-based improvement activities to improve their patient care practices. Applies information technology to manage information, access online medical information, and support their own continuing education. Additional ResponsibilitiesContractual obligations include taking 1st emergency call one in four days/evenings and one in four weekends. Work Environment ConsiderationsWorks in an environment with biological, chemical and mechanical hazards. The employer will provide appropriate training, protective equipment and engineering controls for the protection and safety of the employee. As a condition of employment, the employee is required to abide by all risk management regulations including the proper use of protective devices and procedures. Education, Qualifications, ExperiencePhysician Assistant or APRN degree from an accredited program. Diploma from an accredited program, current state license. Must have previous experience in outpatient and emergency room settings. Must have acceptable criminal background check. Personal CharacteristicsExcellent communication skills, strong problem-solving abilities, positive interpersonal skills and sensitivity. Well organized, self-directed, & able to coordinate well with others. Must consistently display honesty, courtesy and respect when communicating with staff, physicians, patients and families. Must demonstrate professionalism in all aspects of the job, including dress and manner. Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesAPP skills in medical, minor surgical and emergency room situations. Understanding of safety precautions, infection control procedures for dealing with sharp instruments, needles, blood, and body fluids. Understanding of good body mechanics to avoid injury. Able to use all related medical equipment, machines, monitors; computer applications. Utilization of critical thinking and judgment in diagnostic process. EquipmentCardiac monitors, telemetry, thermometers, blood pressure and oxygen saturation machines, defibrillator, pacer, crash carts, phone, intercom, fax, computer, shredder, copy machine, whirlpool, stretcher, suction machine, hospital beds, nebulizer, crutches, splints, IV pumps, etc. Expectation of ServiceThis is a non-exempt position which requires 40 hours per week for a full-time position. Regular and punctual attendance is required when scheduled. Physical RequirementsMust speak clearly, repetitive motion using wrists, hands and/or fingers. Average hearing and vision must be able to use good body mechanics to: lift up to 20 pounds frequently. Able to maneuver medication cart and various equipment (weight 150 to 175#), be able to reach, turn, and/or bend as necessary to perform care and treatments of residents, some of whom may be in bed. Must be able to be on feet on concrete hallways for at least an 8-hour shift to think clearly and manage a large amount of information quickly. Prioritizing and handling patient, resident and/or staff concerns in order of importance, reasoning ability. Mathematics ability, language ability for large quantity of reading, report preparation and communication. Position can be a fast-paced environment, with stimuli from every direction, and must have ability to triage and manage all information effectively.
