Position Summary
The Temporary Woodshop Teacher Assistant supports the high school woodshop instructor by helping supervise students, reinforcing safety procedures, and assisting with hands-on instructional activities. This position plays a key role in maintaining a safe, organized, and productive learning environment during woodworking and construction-based classes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assist the woodshop teacher in supervising students during hands-on activities
Reinforce and monitor adherence to all shop safety rules, including proper use of hand tools, power tools, and required personal protective equipment (PPE)
Support students with basic woodworking skills, measurements, materials handling, and tool setup, as directed by the instructor
Actively monitor student behavior and immediately address unsafe practices
Assist with setup and breakdown of materials, tools, and equipment before and after class
Conduct visual safety checks of tools and work areas
Help maintain cleanliness, organization, and inventory of the woodshop
Provide individual or small-group support to students as needed
Support classroom management under the direction of the certified teacher
Follow all school policies, emergency procedures, and district guidelines
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Experience working with adolescents in an educational, trade, or supervisory setting
Working knowledge of basic woodworking tools and shop safety practices
Ability to follow direction and work collaboratively with instructional staff
Strong communication skills and attention to detail, particularly related to safety
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in carpentry, woodworking, construction, or a related trade
Previous experience as a teacher assistant, paraprofessional, or substitute
OSHA 10 certification or equivalent safety training
Familiarity with career and technical education (CTE) programs
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand and move throughout the woodshop for extended periods
Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment within district guidelines
Ability to visually and physically monitor student activity and tool use
Work Schedule
Temporary, short-term assignment (daily or multi-week coverage as needed)
School-day hours aligned with the high school schedule
