A.S. Sustainability AssistantUnder the direction of the A.S. Sustainability Coordinator, the A.S. Sustainability Assistant will assist with the administration and coordination of Associated Students' sustainability mission. The A.S. Sustainability Assistant will contribute to sustainable facility operations, documentation, inventory, research, program logistics, and event planning at Aztec Student Union, Scripps Cottage, Viejas Arena, Open Air Theatre, SDSU Children's Center, Aztec Recreation Center, Aztec Aquaplex and Mission Bay Aquatic Center facilities as assigned, in accordance with A.S. Values and LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance certification standards. This position will provide support for the organization's environmental initiatives led by the A.S. Green Love Sustainability Commission.Primary FunctionsAssists with the logistical planning of sustainable events (speaker outreach & communication, reservation details, catering orders, zero-waste prep, budget considerations, promotion strategy, vendor contracts when applicable, and event cleanup)Maintains Green Love / A.S. Sustainability storageStorage organization, labeling, and inventory trackingSustainable promo item ordering based using FIFOCompostable disposable ordering using FIFO and circularity principlesConducts research and makes sustainable product alternative suggestions to A.S. colleagues using "upstream and downstream" lifecycle circularity Conducts sustainability research as assigned by the A.S. Sustainability Coordinator and A.S. Associate Director of Facilities & Sustainability and provides basic training to full-and part-time staff, student leaders, and volunteers as neededSupport the maintenance of the Children's Center Garden using organic methods as instructed by external gardening consultantCreate and distribute sustainability educational materials (ex: writing articles, how-to guidelines, fact sheets, slidedecks, or supporting project proposals) as assigned by A.S. Sustainability CoordinatorMonitor and maintain the A.S. Green Love Instagram accountRespond to inquiries via DM with guidance from A.S. Sustainability CoordinatorCreate and/or edit story and feed posts in collaboration with the Green Love volunteer leaders and A.S. Marketing staff following A.S. Social Media Guidelines and Green Love Social Media Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) utilizing the project management platform, Asana.Share posts from SDSU campus partners when they promote the A.S value of Sustainability or amplify important campus sustainability news and eventsOrganize, set up, clean up, and occasionally participate in A.S. Green Love tabling efforts at events including but not limited to:ARC 'Til DarkARC FestWeekly SDSU Farmer's MarketASUB events (includes GreenFest)Monthly utility invoice data input into tracking systemWaste diversionElectricity consumption and demand peaksWater useNatural gas useEV charging creditsSolar panel creditsContribute to LEED O+M prerequisite and credit verification and documentationCustomer Service and CollaborationEstablishes and maintains working relationships with various A.S. and University departmentsMaintains positive and effective working relationships with all customersSafetyEnsures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policiesAdheres to Associated Students' Code of Safe PracticesQualificationsMinimum & Preferred RequirementsMust have a passion for sustainability and environmental justice.Demonstrate a clear grasp of your current academic, personal, and extracurricular obligations and effectively manage your time with confidence.Education:Students must be enrolled in at least half time units at SDSU (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate).International students must have full-time enrollment at SDSU (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate).Global Campus units do not meet the SDSU unit requirements.Must be in good academic standingMust be eligible to work in the United StatesPreferred candidate will be a returning student for at least one additional school yearCandidate can be an undergraduate or graduate studentExperience:Previous experience volunteering or working for sustainability organizations is preferred.Knowledge and background experience of sustainability requiredPrevious involvement and experience working with groups of people as a team requiredComputer knowledge using Windows, Google Suite and Microsoft Suite, as well as social media, including Instagram and Facebook.Trainings:Anti-Harassment training (must be completed within 30 days of hire)Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)Gender Awareness Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)License & Certification:American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED certifications are required (must obtain within the first 30 days of employment)Valid California Driver's License requiredPerformance ExpectationsEngage comfortably with individuals from different cultural backgrounds.Able to meet deadlinesBe punctual to shiftsClearly communicate issues, employee needs, and progress on tasks.Report to supervisor every shift.Must professionally represent Aztec Recreation, Associated Students and San Diego State University at all timesKnowledge, Skills & AbilitiesAbility to communicate effectively with othersSchedule & Working ConditionsThis is a part-time (Up to 20 hours/week) position with expected hours to be worked during business hours of Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with the exception of occasional events at night and on the weekends. Hours will be adjusted when needed. Must be available on Wednesdays, 11a.m. - 1 p.m. for Green Love Commission meetings and monthly Green Lunch Bag Series.
