The TCUP Project upgrades the technology used to manage light rail operations, replacing the existing train control system with a state‑of‑the‑art radio‑based technology.\n\nPosition Description\nUnder the direction of the TCUP Technology Project Manager, the Assistant Engineer supports systems engineering and communications integration activities for the Train Control Upgrade Project. Responsibilities include reviewing and evaluating technical submittals, integrating CBTC with related technologies, developing electrical drawings and plans, providing field support during construction, testing, and commissioning, and contributing to installation, integration, and test plans.\n\nExamples of Important and Essential Duties\n\nProvide engineering support to the Train Control Upgrade Project delivering CBTC technology.\n\nOrganize and lead technical meetings to identify, analyze, and resolve engineering issues.\n\nReview vendor submissions of plans, technical documents, and reports to support SFMTA design reviews.\n\nWork with vendors, transit staff, and consultants to design integrations.\n\nGenerate drawings, plans, guides, manuals, as‑built drawings.\n\nDevelop root‑cause analyses and corrective action reports.\n\nWitness post‑installation tests and perform QA/QC tasks.\n\nPlan and execute field tests to validate vendor functionality and system interfaces.\n\nMonitor network performance for compliance with contract specifications.\n\nCommunicate findings and recommended solutions to management.\n\nIdentify, track, and catalog defects and bugs; maintain traceability.\n\nConduct periodic field visits to gather data for designs and drafts.\n\nPerform routine field inspections to ensure conformance with plans and codes.\n\nPerform data entry and formatting tasks to support the project.\n\nPerform other related duties as assigned.\n\nMinimum Qualifications\n\nPossession of a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree in Electrical Engineering.\n\nOne year of verifiable professional engineering experience performing at least three of the following tasks: preparing or assisting in studies, designs, drawings, sketches, and plans; collecting data and site visits; preparing contract specifications and cost estimates; preparing reports; conducting data analysis; conducting routine field inspections.\n\nPossession of a valid Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certificate issued by NCEES.\n\nAlternatively, possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license in Electrical Engineering from the California Board of Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.\n\nDesirable Qualifications\n\nMaster’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.\n\nKnowledge of systems engineering concepts.\n\nExposure to CBTC, rail transit, signaling, or telecommunications systems.\n\nExperience with computer networks and communication systems.\n\nExperience with packet‑based networks and human‑machine interfaces.\n\nField engineering or testing experience.\n\nExperience as a contractor or employee of a public transit agency.\n\nTechnical writing and editing experience.\n\nExperience preparing engineering cost estimates.\n\nProficiency with AutoCAD and drafting tools.\n\nExperience with project management software (P6 Primavera, Microsoft Project).\n\nExperience working with system engineers, project managers, operations, and regulatory bodies.\n\nProficiency with Microsoft Office products such as Excel, Visio, Outlook, and Word.\n\nExperience interpreting telematics data using Python, SQL, Tableau, or similar tools.\n\nAbility to work well with a diverse, multi‑disciplinary workforce.\n\nEqual Employment Opportunity\nThe City and County of San Francisco encourages women, minorities and persons with disabilities to apply.
