Following the American Red Cross creed of Ensure Patron Safety and Protect lives.\n\nEssential Functions:\n\nRepresent Kentwood Public Schools and the KPS Aquatic Center by maintaining a professional attitude in keeping with the department’s mission.\n\nThe swim instructor is responsible for instructing swim lesson participants.\n\nMaintain the safety of participants in and around the class.\n\nWork with other instructors in co teaching certain classes.\n\nEvaluates students participating in swim lessons.\n\nSubmits completed report cards, skills sheets on time.\n\nAttends mandatory meetings and training sessions as scheduled.\n\nCommunicate effectively with the lifeguards on duty, Manager, Director of Aquatics, and act as a team in an emergency.\n\nDeliver excellent customer service to all that utilize the facility and serve our diverse population.\n\nHandle all incidents in a manner appropriate to your training. First Aid is to be handled by the Lifeguard UNLESS it is LIFE THREATENING. Recommend that all injured patrons seek professional medical attention.\n\nAssist the Swim Lessons Coordinator in keeping the community informed of pool activities.\n\nPerform other duties as assigned.\n\nKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:\n\nThorough knowledge and application of teaching swimming and water safety skills per the standards of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Manual.\n\nAbility to work in an economically, culturally and racially diverse environment.\n\nPatience and ability to help all students progress at own pace.\n\nAn understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures.\n\nLeadership and public relations skills.\n\nCommunication skills.\n\nDecision-making skills.\n\nPhysical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:\n\nAda Requirements: The physical demands, work environment factors, and mental functions described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
