City of Etowah – Job Description Part‑Time Police Officer Department: Etowah Police Department Classification: Part‑Time / Non‑Exempt Reports To: Chief of Police or Designee Position Summary The Part‑Time Police Officer serves as a sworn law enforcement officer for the City of Etowah. This position is responsible for protecting life and property, enforcing laws and ordinances, responding to emergency and non‑emergency calls, and promoting public safety within the community. Officers in this role support the department by filling shifts as needed, assisting with special events, and providing supplemental coverage to ensure continuous, effective policing. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Patrol assigned areas of the city to deter crime, enhance community safety, and maintain public order. Respond to calls for service, including accidents, disturbances, alarms, and other incidents. Conduct preliminary investigations, gather evidence, interview witnesses, and prepare accurate reports. Enforce federal, state, and local laws, including traffic regulations and city ordinances. Make arrests when necessary and ensure proper handling, processing, and documentation of detainees. Provide assistance to citizens, offering information, direction, and support during emergencies. Testify in court as required. Maintain departmental equipment, vehicles, and uniforms in proper working condition. Participate in required training, briefings, and departmental meetings. Support community policing initiatives and represent the department with professionalism and integrity. Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or designee. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Must be at least 21 years of age. Valid Tennessee driver’s license. Ability to pass a background check, physical examination, drug screening, and psychological evaluation. Ability to work varying hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, based on departmental needs. Strong communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with the public. Preferred Qualifications Prior law enforcement experience. Current POST certification in the State of Tennessee. Familiarity with Etowah’s geography, community, and local ordinances Demonstrated ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment. Experience with community policing and public engagement. Work Environment & Physical Requirements Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Duties may involve high‑risk situations, physical exertion, and exposure to hazardous environments. Must be able to stand, walk, run, lift, bend, and perform essential physical tasks associated with law enforcement. Must maintain the physical and mental readiness required for emergency response. Compensation & Schedule Part‑time, non‑exempt position. Hours vary based on departmental needs, special events, and shift coverage.
