This role will serve as a technical lead and subject matter expert for mainframe-based claims adjudication applications, contributing to production support, system enhancements, complex defect resolution, and modernization-related initiatives.\nThe ideal candidate has strong hands-on mainframe development experience, deep knowledge of healthcare claims processing, and the ability to partner with business and technology stakeholders to deliver reliable, compliant, and scalable solutions.\n\nResponsibilities\nServe as a technical lead and subject matter expert for mainframe-based healthcare claims adjudication systems.\nAnalyze, design, develop, test, and implement complex fixes, enhancements, and maintenance updates for claims-processing applications.\nDevelop and maintain applications using COBOL, DB2, VSAM, JCL, and CICS.\nInvestigate and resolve critical production incidents, application defects, performance issues, batch-processing failures, and functional issues.\nPerform root cause analysis for recurring production issues and recommend sustainable corrective or preventive actions.\nSupport mainframe system upgrades, application enhancements, releases, and integration activities.\nPartner with business analysts, product owners, and operational stakeholders to translate healthcare claims requirements and regulatory updates into detailed technical designs and development solutions.\nParticipate in code reviews and enforce established client coding, security, documentation, and quality standards.\nUse mainframe debugging and analysis tools, such as Xpediter, File-AID, and Abend-AID, to diagnose and resolve complex issues.\nCollaborate with application development, QA, infrastructure, database, and production-support teams to ensure smooth integration and delivery.\nCreate and maintain technical designs, process documentation, support procedures, runbooks, and knowledge-transfer materials.\nMentor junior developers and provide technical guidance on mainframe development standards, claims-processing logic, debugging, and production support.\nSupport compliance requirements by maintaining accurate documentation, traceability, and appropriate controls for application changes.\nRequired qualifications\n6–9 years of hands-on mainframe application development experience.\nStrong development experience with:\nCOBOL.\nDB2.\nVSAM.\nJCL.\nCICS.\nExperience supporting, enhancing, and troubleshooting mainframe-based enterprise applications.\nHands-on experience with mainframe debugging tools such as Xpediter, File-AID, Abend-AID, or equivalent tools.\nStrong experience investigating production defects, batch abends, performance issues, and application failures.\nExperience conducting root cause analysis and delivering permanent fixes for recurring issues.\nKnowledge of healthcare claims processing and claims adjudication workflows.\nExperience with healthcare EDI transactions, including 837 claims and 835 remittance advice files.\nWorking knowledge of ICD-10 coding standards and their impact on claims processing.\nAbility to analyze business requirements and convert them into technical specifications, program designs, and implementation plans.\nExperience participating in code reviews, testing, release management, and change-control processes.\nStrong problem-solving, written communication, documentation, and stakeholder-management skills.\nAbility to work effectively in a hybrid team environment and be onsite in Chicago three days per week.\nPreferred qualifications\nExperience working with payer, provider, health insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, or other healthcare claims platforms.\nExperience with HIPAA-related claims-processing requirements and healthcare data controls.\nFamiliarity with Agile delivery methodologies, Jira, ServiceNow, or similar work-management and incident-management tools.\nExperience with mainframe production-support models, including on-call support and incident triage.\nPrior experience mentoring developers or serving as a technical lead on mainframe development initiatives.\nExperience with testing tools or
