Job Description
Rappahannock Community College (RCC) is a two-campus institution serving a rural and diverse 12-county area in the Chesapeake Bay region of Virginia, whose mission is to provide inclusive access to exceptional training and educational opportunities meeting the community’s needs and preparing individuals for success as learners, employees, and citizens.
RCC seeks applicants for a Program Assistant/Academic Tutor for the Upward Bound Program. This part‑time grant‑funded position requires a flexible working schedule, including Saturdays, up to twenty‑nine hours per week for the summer with potential continuation during the academic year (September 1, 2026 – May 30, 2027). Attendance on overnight trips with students may be required.
RCC Upward Bound (UB) is a free college preparatory program funded by the U.S. Department of Education to provide academic and non‑cognitive support to low‑income, first‑generation high school students.
The primary objective of this position is to ensure the well‑being of program members in grades 9th‑12th during the six‑week summer program. Responsibilities include developing positive relationships with participants, mentoring, assisting with planning and leading free‑time, elective workshops, and structured activities, supervising recreation and co‑curricular activities, and preparing meals.
This role also provides tutoring to individuals and small groups, both virtually and in person, across subjects such as English, math, science, history, foreign language, technology, or other appropriate academic fields. The incumbent reviews class material, discusses text, reviews test questions, generates ideas for papers, assists students in monitoring progress, and attends workshops and field trips with Upward Bound students.
Additional duties include handling or referring disciplinary, crisis, and personal issues to appropriate Upward Bound staff. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working with low‑income and first‑generation students from diverse backgrounds and overcoming similar barriers.
Minimum Qualifications
Must have knowledge, skills, and experience to tutor in math, science, English, foreign language, science, and track academic progress.
Excellent organizational, verbal, and communication skills.
Position requires a positive attitude and the ability to work effectively with and display sensitivity toward a wide range of ethnic, socioeconomic, cultural, and lifestyle differences among staff and student participants.
Personal interaction, team‑player attitude, and leadership skills are essential.
Knowledge of technology and/or willingness to learn; ability to use modern office equipment, technology, and software.
Ability to follow directions, complete assigned projects with minimal supervision, prioritize tasks, multitask, maintain accurate records and files, complete tasks under strict deadlines, and analyze and resolve complex problems and situations.
Demonstrates professionalism and behaves in accordance with the college’s mission, goals, and values.
Must be available during training and for overnight college tours (July 14, 2026 – July 18, 2027).
Additional Considerations
Associate or Bachelor’s degree in education, English, math, or an appropriate academic major.
