Payroll Accountant II

Are you an experienced payroll professional looking to join a supportive and collaborative team? The Weitz Company is hiring a Payroll Accountant II for our office in downtown Des Moines! The Payroll Accountant II will assist the Accounting Supervisor with maintaining company payroll functions. This includes all tasks related to processing payroll and managing a third-party administrator for payroll taxes including multi-state taxes and annual W2s.The Weitz Company has been Building a Better Way since 1855. We believe our employees to be our most valuable asset, and we are committed to growing a diverse and inclusive culture that inspires, motivates, and continuously improves.What You’ll DoManage third-party administrator to complete federal and state tax reports and submit state unemployment reports and payments, tax deposits, and other required reports and payments within appropriate periodManage and prioritize workload to meet critical deadlines and avoid penaltiesAccurately prepare, compute, input, and process payroll for employees including all payroll tax calculations and system setupCollaborate with Human Resources to create new employee payroll records, determine eligibility of employee benefits, ensure benefit deductions are accurate, inactivate employee records, and issue manual checks if required by state guidelinesUpdate employee records for paid time off and benefit information, position and grade changes, location changes, wage increases, and garnishments and child support withholdingReconcile monthly billings and submit payments for various benefit vendorsSetup elections, verify calculations, and submit contributions for company’s 401(k) planMaintain worker’s compensation plan setup and submit monthly reporting for OCIP and CCIP policiesCreate journal entries and reconcile payroll general ledger accounts on a routine basisCommunicate effectively and build trust both inside and outside of the company for payroll-related mattersMeet established quality standards while ensuring work is accurateRoutinely test and challenge updates in the computer system-operating environment to ensure accuracyIdentify, recommend, and/or implement process changes to make the payroll process more efficientStay abreast of changing government regulations regarding payrollWhat We're Looking For Experience:4+ years of payroll experience requiredExperience working in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlinesCertified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) is a plusSkills:Analytical with strong math aptitude and problem-solving skillsWorking knowledge of federal taxation and multi-state tax laws/filing regulationsHigh level of accuracy and attention to detailExcellent communication skillsStrong customer service skillsAbility to maintain a high level of confidentialityFlexibility to pivot priorities as neededPositive attitude and open to changeTeam player who is willing to jump in and help where neededTechnology:Proficient in 10-key and Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and OutlookAbility to learn specific job-related software upon hire What We OfferCompetitive PayRewarding Bonus ProgramComprehensive Benefits Package with Tax-Advantaged HSA and FSA offeringsEmployer-Paid Short- and Long-Term Disability ProgramsEmployer-Paid Life InsuranceGenerous Paid Time Off Provisions401K Retirement Savings Plan with Company MatchTuition ReimbursementFully Paid Parental LeaveVoluntary Products Including: Critical Illness Insurance and Accident InsuranceCorporate Wellness Program with Wellness Time Off and RewardsVisa sponsorship is not available for this position at this time.The Company does not accept unsolicited resumes from search firms or agencies.
