Job DescriptionAmerican Traveler is seeking a travel nurse RN PCU - Progressive Care Unit for a travel nursing job in Rapid City, South Dakota.Job Description & RequirementsSpecialty: PCU - Progressive Care UnitDiscipline: RNStart Date: 07/13/2026Duration: 13 weeks48 hours per weekShift: 12 hours, nightsEmployment Type: TravelAssignment OverviewShift: Nights, 4x12hrsHours: 48 hrs/wkStart Date: Jul 13, 2026Length: 13 weeksOpenings: 1DescriptionAmerican Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU/HVU) position in Rapid City, SD, requiring a minimum of 1 year of PCU-specific experience and strong cardiac procedural skills.Details44-bed mixed acuity unit serving Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and Med/Surg patient populationsPatient types include direct admits, ED admits, post-cath lab, MI/NSTEMI/STEMI, CHF, dysrhythmia management, pacemaker malfunction, epicardial pacers, as well as backup stroke and medical overflow casesStep-down level care provided for post-cardiac/vascular, post-cardiac cath, post-open heart surgery, post-TAVR, post-EP studies, and post-pacemaker insertion patientsRN-to-patient ratio is typically 1:4, adjustable to 1:3 based on acuity12-hour night shifts, 48 hours per weekEvery-other-weekend rotation requiredNo on-call responsibilitiesFloating required primarily to the sister General PCU unit, with potential float to MS/Tele or ICU to care for PCU-level patients, always within or below scope of practiceCharting via Epic; experience preferred but not required — notify your recruiter if you lack Epic experience so manager approval can be soughtAlaris pumps and Omnicell medication dispensing system used on the unitRequirementsActive RN license — South Dakota (SD) state or Compact license requiredCurrent certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSSMinimum of 1.5 years of general nursing experience, with at least 1 year specific to PCUExperience with cardiac procedural recovery including CABG, TAVR, and post-cardiac cathProficiency with MI pharmacology and titratable cardiac/vasoactive drips (e.g., Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitroglycerin, Levophed, Dopamine) and Heparin dripsCardiac rhythm interpretation skills requiredChest tube management experience requiredTNK administration experience preferredTwo professional references dated within the past year required for considerationDOB and SSN required for considerationAdditional InformationUnit support includes CNAs (ratio 1:5–8 depending on shift), an unassigned charge nurse, phlebotomy for peripheral blood draws, a tele tech overseeing cardiac monitoring (RN confirms strips at 6am and 6pm), RT available 24/7, and a hospitalist in-facility 24/7Orientation consists of 2 partial days of education followed by 3 supervised 12-hour shifts on the unitHoliday coverage expected on a rotating basis (every other)RTO of up to 7 days allowed; a full week off requires an extension; no time off approved during the first 3 weeks of August due to the Sturgis Bike RallyMay be expected to precept nursing studentsNavy blue scrubs requiredFree parking available on-siteFirst-time travelers are welcome to apply with 2 or more years of nursing experienceCandidates must reside at least 100 miles from any facility within the health system to be eligibleFormer permanent staff must wait at least 1 full year before returning as a travelerAmerican Traveler Job ID #P-709298.
