ATLS is deeply committed to recovery-oriented, person-centered care that respects lived experience as a powerful asset in supporting community healing.POSITION SUMMARYThe Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) is a trained professional who uses their own personal lived experience of mental health recovery, substance use recovery, or both, to provide hope, advocacy, and practical support to individuals currently navigating their own recovery journey. The CPSS is an integral member of the ATLS clinical team, working alongside Qualified Professionals, licensed clinicians, and medical staff to deliver peer-based services across our Yanceyville, Roxboro, and Greensboro service areas.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESPeer Support ServicesProvide individual peer support to consumers using a strengths-based, person-centered, and trauma-informed approach grounded in shared lived experienceAssist individuals in identifying personal recovery goals, building natural support networks, and developing individualized wellness and crisis management plans (including WRAP Wellness Recovery Action Plans)Model recovery, self-determination, and hope through consistent, authentic peer engagementSupport consumers in navigating community systems including mental health services, substance use treatment, housing, employment, and benefitsAccompany consumers to appointments, hearings, and community activities as appropriateFacilitate or co-facilitate peer support groups, recovery education workshops, and community engagement activitiesProvide outreach to individuals who are disengaged or at risk of disengaging from behavioral health servicesIntegrated Team CollaborationWork collaboratively within the ATLS multidisciplinary team, including QPs, licensed clinicians, NPs, and MAT/OAT program staffCommunicate relevant consumer updates, concerns, and safety observations to the Clinical Services Manager and supervising QP in a timely mannerParticipate in team meetings, case conferences, clinical supervision, and training activitiesSupport individuals enrolled in opioid addiction treatment programs by offering peer-based recovery support, destigmatization, and motivational engagementAssist with transition planning for individuals moving between levels of careDocumentation & ComplianceComplete all required service documentation in the EHR within established ATLS timeframes, including peer support progress notes and service logsDocument peer support services in compliance with NC Medicaid Peer Support Services definitions and billing requirementsMaintain documentation consistent with HIPAA, ATLS policies, and the NC Peer Support Specialist Code of EthicsParticipate in internal quality audits and support the QA/QI Officer with peer services complianceAccurately record units of service and complete billing documentation per NC Medicaid standardsProfessional Development & EthicsMaintain active NC Peer Support Specialist Certification, including required continuing education hours for renewalAdhere at all times to the NC Peer Support Specialist Code of Ethics and ATLS professional conduct standardsEngage in reflective practice and individual supervision to support professional growthMaintain clear and appropriate boundaries in all peer relationshipsComplete all ATLS-required annual training including trauma-informed care, cultural humility, and mandatory reportingFulfill mandatory reporting obligations per NC General StatutesMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSCurrent, active North Carolina Peer Support Specialist (NC PSS) Certification issued by the NC PSS Certification BoardPersonal lived experience of mental health recovery, substance use recovery, or co-occurring disorder recovery as a current consumer or person in long-term recoveryHigh school diploma or GEDValid North Carolina driver's license and reliable personal transportationAbility to pass criminal background check and pre-employment screeningsBasic computer literacy and ability to learn electronic health record documentationStrong interpersonal communication skills and commitment to recovery-oriented valuesPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSExperience providing peer support in a community behavioral health, substance use treatment, or integrated care settingCompletion of WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) Facilitator trainingExperience with NC Medicaid Peer Support Services billing and documentationFamiliarity with Motivational Interviewing principlesExperience supporting individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disordersBilingual or multilingual communication abilities a plusWORK ENVIRONMENT & CONDITIONSThis is a community-based position requiring regular travel across Caswell, Person, and Guilford Counties. The CPSS will work in a variety of settings including consumer homes, community locations, and ATLS clinical offices in Yanceyville, Roxboro, and Greensboro.
