Contract Specialist
Chapman and Cutler LLP is seeking a Contract Specialist to join our Practice Innovations contract review team. This role is ideal for a highly analytical professional who enjoys detail-intensive contract analysis and drafting and is motivated by improving how legal services are delivered through process design and advanced technology (including generative AI).The Contract Specialist will collaborate with Firm attorneys and clients to review, edit, draft, and manage contracts. The Contract Specialist is a member of the Practice Innovations contract review team, works under the supervision of Chapman attorneys, and reports to the Contract Review Manager. This position requires occasional in-office presence and provides flexibility for remote work.The responsibilities of the Contract Specialist will include:Reviewing a high volume of contracts with accuracy and thorough attention to detail while following specific legal and client guidelinesUsing technology to support efficient, high-quality delivery of contract review servicesRevising and commenting on contracts to suggest alternate language based on guidelines and incorporating client requirementsPreparing redlines and comparing new contracts against precedent materials to ensure consistency and identify deviationsManaging multiple reviews simultaneously, meeting deadlines and prioritizing projects according to client and team needsCommunicating with clients and counterparties to explain changes and comments in documentsPartnering with the Practice Innovations team to develop strategies that promote innovation and deliver improved processes and technology toolsAssisting the Practice Innovations team in assessing new AI tools and enhancing workflows via use of AI toolsParticipating in training of new contract review team membersServing as point of contact for questions and requests from client and team membersMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Candidates must have a JD and at least two (2) years of experience in a professional setting, or a minimum of four (4) years’ experience in a professional setting. Licensed attorneys will be given preference. Additional preference is given to those with prior contract analysis, law firm, or in-house experience.Familiarity with generative AI platforms (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) and prompt engineeringExperience assessing automation opportunities in business processesCritical thinking skills with ability to read dense materials with close attention to detailExcellent verbal and written communication skills, and keen problem-solving skillsExperience working with spreadsheet and database software and/or business systems is desiredExposure to or experience in using generative AI tools for legal workPride of ownership with client serviceThe ability to communicate and discuss complex concepts with a high level of professionalism and confidentialityExcellent time management and project management skills, with ability to work independently to meet objectives and deadlinesPatient and pragmatic when working with clients, third parties, managers, and colleaguesSelf-starter, willing to learn new technologies and operational frameworksCommitted to following all Firm security protocols and maintaining information securityIn accordance with the Illinois Pay Transparency Law, the expected salary range for this Illinois position is $78,000-$105,000 dependent on previous experience and team fit.
