This role is focused on observing work in progress, identifying potential issues, and helping confirm that construction aligns with structural plans and design intent.\nIn addition to field work, this position supports Construction Administration efforts, including shop drawing reviews and RFI responses.\nThe Field Engineer will work closely with internal engineers, contractors, and inspectors to communicate field conditions, assist with RFIs and shop drawings, and help resolve issues in a practical and timely manner. This role requires a hands-on, solutions-oriented mindset and strong communication skills.\nKey Responsibilities\nPerform field observations to verify construction aligns with structural plans and design intent\nIdentify and document field issues, discrepancies, and non-conforming work\nPrepare clear and concise field reports with supporting documentation\nAssist with reviewing and responding to RFIs and field-related questions\nSupport the shop drawing review process\nCommunicate effectively with contractors, subcontractors, inspectors, and internal teams\nHelp troubleshoot and resolve field conditions and constructability issues\nCoordinate between the jobsite and office to support timely follow-up and resolution\nManage multiple active projects while maintaining responsiveness to field needs\nQualifications\nBachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering\nEIT required; PE preferred or in progress\n2–5+ years of structural engineering experience, ideally with field exposure\nStrong understanding of structural systems (wood, steel, concrete, masonry)\nAbility to read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, and details\nFamiliarity with applicable codes (IBC, CBC, ASCE, ACI, AISC, NDS)\nStrong communication and problem-solving skills\nTechnical Skills\nExperience with AutoCAD, Revit, and Bluebeam preferred\nFamiliarity with structural analysis software (RISA, ETABS, RAM, SAFE, or similar)\nAbility to clearly document and communicate field conditions\nKey Attributes\nHands-on and solutions-oriented\nStrong communicator, both in the field and with internal teams\nSelf-motivated and able to work independently\nTeam-oriented with a client-focused mindset\nDetail-oriented with strong critical thinking skills\nProfessional and dependable in field environments\nPerformance Expectations / What Success Looks Like\nAble to perform field observations independently within the first 30–60 days\nDemonstrates a strong understanding of structural plans and field conditions\nEffectively supports shop drawing reviews and RFI responses\nCommunicates field issues clearly, concisely, and professionally\nBuilds strong working relationships with field teams and is seen as a resource\nManages multiple projects while staying responsive and organized\n*All final compensation offers are determined based on experience*\nAbout VCA Structural\nVCA Structural is a collaborative structural engineering team delivering practical, buildable solutions across a wide range of projects.
