The Senior Systems Engineer provides design decisions, setting engineering standards, and mentoring team members while remaining hands‑on. This is a hands‑on role that leads complex infrastructure initiatives, manages and coordinates projects across multiple technology teams, and drives the identification, design, and deployment of new virtualization solutions. Deep expertise in virtualization technologies is required to ensure platform reliability, performance, security, and alignment with business objectives.\n\nPrimary Responsibilities\n\nDesign, deploy, and manage enterprise VMware vSphere and VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) environments hosting Windows and Linux workloads.\n\nImplement and maintain vSphere HA, DRS, Site Recovery Manager, and NSX‑T for network virtualization and micro‑segmentation.\n\nSupport SAN/NAS (Pure Storage, NetApp, HPE Nimble) solutions across multiple sites and manage HPE servers using HPE OneView.\n\nPerform capacity planning, lifecycle management, and both proactive and reactive maintenance of the VMware environment.\n\nMonitor and optimize VM performance using VMware Aria Suite, vCenter tools, and other monitoring applications.\n\nMaintain and provision Omnissa Horizon VDI and Azure Virtual Desktop environments.\n\nDesign hybrid cloud architectures with workload portability between on‑premises VCF and public clouds (VMware Cloud on AWS, Azure VMware Solution).\n\nImplement cloud automation and orchestration using VMware Aria Suite Automation, Cloud Assembly, and PowerCLI/PowerShell scripting.\n\nConfigure federation between private and public cloud deployments with strategies for cloud bursting and disaster recovery.\n\nApply security hardening standards following VMware and industry best practices (STIG, CIS, HIPAA benchmarks).\n\nConduct regular security assessments and vulnerability patching across VMware infrastructure including ESXi hosts.\n\nManage NSX firewall policies, VM security policies, and network segmentation in collaboration with security and network teams.\n\nImplement security logging and alerting through VMware Aria Suite Log Insight and SIEM integration.\n\nLead VMware infrastructure projects from inception through implementation with full documentation, adhering to BC/DR best practices.\n\nServe as VMware subject matter expert and technical liaison for cross‑functional initiatives.\n\nCollaborate with Windows, Linux, and application development teams to ensure platform performance requirements are met.\n\nDevelop and maintain virtualization standards, procedures, and technical documentation including diagrams.\n\nOther duties as required.\n\nJob Qualifications\n\nBachelor's degree required, preferably in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field.\n\n10+ years of hands‑on experience with VMware vSphere, ESXi, and related VMware technologies.\n\nStrong proficiency with Windows Server (2016/2019/2022), Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy in virtualized environments.\n\nExperience with vSphere networking (VDS, NSX‑T), storage technologies (VMFS, vSAN, SAN, NAS), and shared storage protocols.\n\nExperience managing data centers and hardware/software such as HPE servers, HPE OneView, and enterprise storage (Pure, NetApp, HPE Nimble).\n\nProficiency in PowerCLI and PowerShell scripting for automation.\n\nExperience with Omnissa Horizon and Azure Virtual Desktop.\n\nStrong problem‑solving, troubleshooting, and project management skills.\n\nExcellent communication skills with ability to convey technical concepts to non‑technical audiences.\n\nAbility to prioritize workloads for projects and operations in fast‑paced environments.\n\nCore networking knowledge and ability to troubleshoot connectivity issues with network teams.\n\nFlexibility for after‑hours work and participation in on‑call rotation.\n\nMust be able to work on‑site at Chicago office and/or regional data centers as needed.\n\nVMware Certified Professional (VCP) or higher (VCAP, VCDX) preferred.\n\nVMware Cloud Foundation certification preferred.\n\nExperience with VMware Aria Suite (Operations, Automation, Log Insight) preferred.\n\nFamiliarity with VMware Cloud on AWS, Azure VMware Solution preferred.\n\nUnderstanding of security compliance frameworks (STIG, CIS, NIST, HIPAA) preferred.\n\nCore networking knowledge and ability to troubleshoot connectivity issues with network teams preferred.\n\nBenefits and Perks\n\nFull benefits package, including Paid Time Off (PTO), medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with match, robust EAP, wellness program, and much more.\n\nThe salary range for this position is $120,000 - 145,000 (USD).
