The position performs skilled work in maintaining autos, trucks, dump trucks, track/wheeled vehicles (back hoe, excavator, compactor, bulldozer, motor graders, etc.), mowers, pumps, fire and rescue vehicles, small gas engines and other associated equipment.Essential Job FunctionsESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSReceives work orders and analyzes repair requirement in accordance with standard practices of automotive trade.Under supervision, performs drive line, engine, transmission, rear end, electrical systems and diesel and gas engine repair on automotive and track/wheeled vehicles.Performs preventive maintenance such as lubrications, oil changes, and service checks.Changes and repairs tires.Installs and assists with installing special automotive equipment.Performs general shop maintenance and clean up.May be required to assist with emergency support functions (ESF) in the EOC during emergencies or other related emergency duties.(These essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed. Employees will be required to perform other job related marginal duties as required.)Minimum QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge of up-to-date methods of maintaining autos, trucks and track/wheeled vehicles.Knowledge of operating principles and maintenance of gasoline and diesel powered engines.Skill in using a variety of standard hand tools, machines, and power equipment.Skill in using electrical and acetylene welding tools.Ability to operate vehicles common to repair orders.Ability to work from oral or written instructions.Ability to work varied hours, including weekends, overtime, standby, call out or shift work.Ability to attend job training as required.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEHigh school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.Four or more years experience in automotive mechanical maintenance; graduation from a vocational technical automotive repair program may substitute for experience.(A comparable amount of training, education or experience may be substituted for the above minimum requirements.)LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONSAbility to possess and maintain a valid Class "B" Florida Commercial Driver's License.Must provide sufficient hand tools to do repairs normal to the trade.Must be ASE certified as Heavy Equipment Mechanic.ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLSAcceptable eyesight (with or without correction).Acceptable hearing (with or without correction).Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.Heavy lifting and carrying (in excess of 45 lbs.).Reaching, pulling, walking, standing on concrete floors, kneeling, bending, stooping and climbing into and under equipment.ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONSWorks inside and outside shop area.Grease or oils.Slippery surfaces.In or with moving objects or vehicles.(Reasonable accommodation will be made for otherwise qualified individuals with a disability or disabilities.)An organization is only as good as the people it employs.
