Here, you will make an impact by:\n\nDevelop and maintain real-time PREEMPT-RT Linux-based software for automated electromechanical systems.\n\nDesign software interfaces between embedded firmware, DSPs, sensors, and higher-level application software.\n\nDevelop system services, drivers and middleware supporting deterministic, real-time operation of automated motion/machine-control systems.\n\nImplement coordinated motion and machine control over industrial fieldbus such as EtherCAT, integrating motors, encoders, sensors, and actuators.\n\nIntegrate the control platform with machine-vision / AI Edge inspection subsystems and operator HMI.\n\nSupport software architecture, integration, testing, and deployment of next-generation automation systems.\n\nCollaborate closely with firmware, hardware and systems engineers to deliver reliable field-ready products.\n\nDrive product architecture, feasibility studies, prototyping and engineering verification\n\nCollaborate with suppliers and external development partners to scale solutions.\n\nGenerate intellectual property through innovative solutions in automation, robotics and cable installation technologies.\n\nInterface with cross-functional team members to ensure successful program delivery.\n\nCommunicate tests and other program results to internal and external stakeholders.\n\nDrive the development and commercialization of products to efficiently, reliably and sustainably deliver energy to customers around the world.\n\nYour Skills and Expertise\n\nTo set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:\n\nBachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution.\n\nThree (3) or more years’ experience in C/C++ software development for embedded systems and real-time operating systems such as PREEMPT-RT Linux.\n\nThree (3) or more years’ experience with multithreaded and concurrent software design, including inter-process communication and complex hardware/software debugging.\n\nThree (3) or more years’ experience using source control and modern software development tools.\n\nAdditional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:\n\nMaster's degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) in Computer Engineering,\n\nComputer Science, Electrical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited institution.\n\nExperience with DSP integration, signal processing, or machine control systems.\n\nExperience developing device drivers or middleware.\n\nExperience with Python scripting and automation.\n\nFamiliarity with industrial fieldbus / communication protocols (EtherCAT — e.g. IgH/SOEM master, CANopen, Modbus, TCP/IP).\n\nExperience with motion/servo control, torque motors, or encoder feedback interfaces.\n\nExperience integrating machine-vision cameras, image pipelines, and OpenCV.\n\nWork location:\n\nWork location: This role follows an on-site working model, requiring the employee to work at least four days a week at the 3M Center in Austin, TX.\n\nTravel: May include up to 15% domestic or international\n\nRelocation: May be authorized\n\nMust be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).\n\nSupporting Your Well-being\n\n3M offers many programs to help you live your best life – both physically and financially.
