As a leading authority in the pet category, we operate with a full stack of resources, capital, and services to support pet parents. Our multi-brand and omni-channel approach includes our own insurance carrier, insurance brands and partner brands.\r\nClarus is a pioneering pet health technology company on a mission to transform the future of pet healthcare. We are dynamic entrepreneurs improving pet health by providing trusted and transparent information across the entire pet health landscape. Join us in shaping a smarter, healthier future for pets everywhere.\r\nAbout The Role\r\nWe're looking for a Staff Engineer to serve as the technical backbone across 2–3 of our delivery pods. You'll lead 8–15 engineers, set the technical bar, and keep things shipping cleanly — all while still getting your hands dirty in the codebase. This isn't a people-management role; it's a technical authority role with real decision-making power.\r\nYou'll own architecture compliance, quality gates, and merge authority for your pods. You'll partner closely with our Technical Program Managers (who handle capacity, velocity, and process) so you can stay focused on what matters most: making sure we're building the right things the right way.\r\nThis is a remote position, with preference given to those located in eastern/central time zones US.\r\nWhat You'll Do\r\nLead technically across 2–3 pods — provide day-to-day technical direction and oversight for contractor engineering teams\r\nAuthor Technical Design Documents (TDDs) for complex features, setting the blueprint before code gets written\r\nOwn quality and architecture compliance — enforce standards, run code reviews, and hold merge/block authority\r\nShape the backlog — provide technical feasibility input during grooming so the team isn't chasing things that won't work\r\nWrite code — stay hands-on (20–30% of your time) to keep context sharp and lead by example\r\nRetain knowledge — build and maintain documentation so critical context doesn't walk out the door\r\nCoordinate with TPMs on pod capacity and delivery health\r\nServe as the on-call escalation point for your assigned pods\r\nWhat You Bring\r\n8+ years of software engineering experience, with meaningful time spent in technical leadership roles\r\nProven track record of leading teams of engineers through complex, multi-system deliveries\r\nStrong architectural thinking — you can zoom out to system design and zoom in to a code review without missing a beat\r\nExperience writing technical design documents that actually get read and followed\r\nComfort working in a model with contractor engineering teams and cross-functional partners\r\nA bias toward clarity — in your code, your docs, and your decisions\r\nTechnical Stack Proficiency: Deep experience with C#/.NET and modern backend service development in Azure, including Azure Functions, Durable Functions, and Kubernetes-based workloads. Strong understanding of event-driven distributed systems built on Azure Service Bus, plus working proficiency in React for frontend application development. Comfortable operating across the full stack and making sound technical decisions in cloud-native architectures.\r\nNice to Have\r\nExperience in environments with dedicated TPM/engineering partnerships\r\nBackground scaling systems or teams in a high-growth or enterprise context\r\nFamiliarity with compliance-heavy or regulated industries\r\nAll of our jobs come with great benefits including healthcare, parental leave and opportunities for career advancements.
