This role is critical in supporting organizational growth and operational excellence, particularly within a construction or construction development environment.\nThe Controller is responsible for coordinating accounting policies, practices, processes, financial data, and reporting, while also managing day-to-day cash flow and internal controls. This individual partners closely with the COO/CFO and operational leaders to support planning, budgeting, and performance analysis.\nThe Controller leads a team of accounting professionals and collaborates with department leaders to deliver accurate, timely, and actionable financial insights to management and the Board of Directors. This role reports directly to the COO/CFO.\nKey Responsibilities\nOversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, account reconciliations, and transaction processing (AR, AP, GL), as well as purchase order controls.\nEnsure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes and preparation of financial statements.\nPartner with the COO/CFO to develop annual plans and budgets; monitor and analyze performance against those plans.\nSupport analysis and identification of opportunities to improve financial performance and operational effectiveness.\nLead, hire, train, and develop the accounting team.\nEnsure timely and accurate financial reporting for stakeholders across the organization.\nManage preparation for annual financial audits and tax filings; coordinate with external auditors and present findings to senior leadership and the Audit Committee.\nActively manage cash flow, banking relationships, and liquidity planning in partnership with the COO/CFO.\nReview accounting data to identify discrepancies, ensure proper accruals, and enforce accurate application of accounting principles.\nMaintain up-to-date knowledge of accounting standards, tax regulations, and industry practices; establish policies and procedures to ensure compliance (including government reporting requirements such as A-133, where applicable).\nServe as administrator for financial systems, including Sage 300/Timberline or similar ERP systems, and provide internal training.\nEvaluate and improve financial systems, processes, and workflows to ensure efficiency and scalability.\nStrengthen internal controls and recommend enhancements as needed.\nQualifications & Experience\nBachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required; CPA or CMA strongly preferred.\nMinimum of 5 years of experience as a Controller, preferably within a small to mid-size (>$40MM) organization.\nExperience in construction, real estate development, or construction-related industries strongly preferred.\nHands-on experience with Sage 300 (Timberline) or comparable accounting/ERP systems required.\nProven ability to lead and develop teams while collaborating effectively across departments.\nStrong problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize, implement process improvements, and handle confidential information.\nLegally authorized to work in the United States (no sponsorship available).\nKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities\nAdvanced proficiency with general ledger systems and financial reporting tools.\nStrong MS Office skills, particularly Excel.\nExcellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.\nAbility to adapt to changing priorities and meet tight deadlines.\nStrong written and verbal communication skills.\nHigh level of personal and professional integrity.\nSelf-motivated with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.\nEffective in a fast-paced, evolving environment.\nStrong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams.\nResponsibility & Authority\nDirect supervision of accounting staff.\nCross-functional coordination through influence and collaboration.\nAuthority to identify and recommend new financial policies and procedures.\nCompensation & Benefits\nBase Salary: $160,000 - $180,000 annually (based on experience)\nComprehensive benefits package including:\nHealth, dental, and vision insurance (90% of employee premiums covered; 50% for dependents)\n403(b) retirement plan with 4% employer match (after one year, with three-year cliff vesting)\nGenerous paid time off, including vacation, sick leave, and 13 paid holidays\nAll qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, national origin, age, ancestry, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, marital status, disability, medical condition, genetic information, pregnancy, or military or veteran status.
