This role involves performing peace officer duties as authorized by New York State law and the Town Board.\nPosition Overview:\nThe Town Constabulary provides public safety services, court security, and enforcement of certain local and state laws. Constables work under the general supervision of the Town Board, with discretion to exercise independent judgment in emergencies. While not a full police officer position, this role requires knowledge of legal procedures and public safety protocols.\nResponsibilities:\nDirecting traffic and providing traffic control during road closures\nMaintaining security at the Town Justice Court, including weapons screening\nEnforcing parking regulations and issuing tickets for violations\nAssisting law enforcement agencies when requested\nResponding to emergency calls, making appropriate requests for assistance, and preparing reports\nServing legal papers, including subpoenas and court orders, on behalf of the Town Supervisor, Town Board, Justices, and Code Enforcement Office\nConducting follow-up visits or checks for Code Enforcement as needed\nMaking collections pursuant to executions issued upon judgments rendered in Justice Court\nProviding security at Town meetings and special events as directed by the Town Supervisor or Town Board resolution\nQualifications & Skills:\nHigh school diploma or equivalent\nWorking knowledge of New York State Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, and Vehicle & Traffic Law\nAbility to remain professional, courteous, and firm when interacting with the public\nStrong judgment and ability to respond appropriately in emergencies\nSuccessful completion of the Basic Course for Peace Officers as prescribed by the Municipal Police Training Council and Initial Firearms (required for appointment)\nOther courses as may be required to perform job duties\nAuthorization to possess and carry a handgun under New York State law\nPossession of a valid New York State driver’s license\nEmployment is contingent upon the clearance of a background investigation.\nThis is a competitive position under Ulster County Civil Service. Appointees will be require to take the Civil Service Exam when it is scheduled through the county.\nHours and Schedule:\nThere are opportunities for both flexible weekly shift schedules and regular weekly shift schedules.\nRegular hours are available during the week for court coverage, Monday – Thursday, 8:30 am – 4:00 pm.
