Mechanic II performs all of the tasks of the Mechanic I but spends less time in preventive maintenance and campaigns. The Mechanic II performs the more complex diagnostic, fabrication, repair and overhauling work. This work requires a broader scope and greater depth of knowledge and skill in a wide variety of functions and subjects, particularly the theory of mechanical and electronic functions. This position reports to a Maintenance Supervisor.\n\nESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES\n\nDiagnoses mechanical bus and specially equipped van problems in the areas of mechanical, pneumatic, HVAC, and hydraulic systems controlled by specialized electronic and computerized systems.\nRepairs problems on virtually any company vehicles including air brakes, transmissions, engines, electronic controls including engine and transmission electronic controls, electronic fare boxes, steering systems, HVAC systems, differentials, 12- and 24-volt electrical systems, electronic head signs, pneumatic lifts, doors, seats, and even windows.\nFabricates parts such as frames, brackets, braces and linkages from metal; Welds and shapes as needed.\nRecommends whether to rebuild or order a new part based on cost efficiency and service history.\nRepairs simple to complex malfunctions, such as those involving automatic transmissions, electronic controls and computer integrated hydraulic and pneumatic systems.\nDetermines task assignments, specific parts to use, and evaluates the work of a helper.\nResponds to road calls. Diagnoses the problem, determines parts and repairs needed, decides whether to deadline the vehicle, and, if possible, repair the vehicle at the breakdown site.\nDetermines whether a vehicle is unsafe for use and if it needs to be deadlines.\nResearches vehicle service manuals for information on maintenance and repair.\nContinuously upgrades technical knowledge and skills to stay current on changes that occur each year.\nUpdates the vehicle's service records.\nRemains fully knowledgeable of and maintains compliance with all Safety rules and regulations.\nEnsures proper safety tools and equipment are used at all times and reports Safety hazards and/or violations.\nOther duties as assigned.\n\nMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS\n\nAssociate's Degree from an accredited college or university.\nThree years total related experience with experience as a journey mechanic on a variety of gasoline and diesel equipment.\nMust be able to report to work during Adverse Weather conditions.\nMust have a good driving record and have or be able to obtain a class B Commercial Driver's License with a passenger endorsement.\nMust be able to meet the Department of Transportation's physical requirements and maintain a valid DOT card.\nStrong analytical/diagnostic skills.\nCertification in servicing motor vehicle A/C in accordance with Section 609 of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.\nCertification in performing both Safety and Emission Inspections in accordance with the State of NC Division of Motor Vehicle Regulations.\nProficient in the use of a full range of mechanic tools and equipment such as steam cleaner, jumper cables, battery booster, hydraulic jack, hoist, creeper, diagnostic and repair equipment, tune-up machine, hydraulic press, vacuum pump, leak detector, electrical circuitry tester, metal machine lathe, A/C recovery machine, arbor press, forklift, welder, cutting tor.\n\nAn equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the above stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.\n\nWorking Conditions:\n\nThe primary work environment is the garage facility. Individual must be constantly aware of the hazards associated with the garage environment. Specifics of the garage environment include vehicles being moved in confined areas, pits, grease spill, fumes, high noise levels, toxic chemicals, and repair equipment being used. Individual will be exposed to toxic and non-toxic cleaning and wax stripping fluids, fuels, glues, lubricants, floor cleaning machine, large stationary bus washer, steam cleaning machines, and other normal garage equipment and tools. Physical stamina is significant: position requires sustained bending and reaching positions at uncomfortable angles.
