Enjoy Freedom.\n\nAbout the Role\nDesigned for an early career individual, the Distribution Line Engineer role offers the opportunity to develop specialized expertise in overhead and underground distribution line design, project coordination, and early mentorship responsibilities.\n\nThis position is an on-site or hybrid position in any of our office locations: St. Louis, MO; Collinsville, IL; or Bettendorf, IA.\n\nYou will:\n\nIndependently develop distribution line designs using utility GIS platforms, pole loading software, and related engineering tools; produce construction drawings, staking sheets, bills of material, and technical documentation.\n\nPerform detailed engineering analysis and calculations to ensure compliance with NESC, RUS, and client-specific distribution standards.\n\nEvaluate routing, pole placement, equipment selection, and constructability considerations, including ROW requirements, clearances, and loading conditions.\n\nCoordinate with survey, field personnel, and real estate teams to incorporate field measurements, as-built data, and easement information into design.\n\nIdentify and support permitting requirements (DOT, railroad, local jurisdictions) and assist with preparing exhibits, applications, and supporting materials.\n\nConduct pole loading analysis, guying design, underground conduit/duct bank design, and basic structural checks for distribution facilities.\n\nReview and finalize material assemblies, transformer/switchgear placements, and construction configurations for complete IFC design packages.\n\nSupport client meetings, cross-discipline coordination, and field visits for design validation, site assessment, and construction support.\n\nContribute to continuous improvement efforts, standards development, design templates, and technical initiatives within the distribution engineering team.\n\nProvide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers, designers, and drafters.\n\nRequirements\nEducation/Experience\n\nBachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or related ABET-accredited engineering discipline required.\n\nTypically, 2 or more years of relevant experience in distribution line design or utility engineering. Equivalent combinations of training, practical experience, and performance will also be considered.\n\nFE/EIT preferred or in progress.\n\nDesired Skills & Attributes\n\nProficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel), AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and utility design tools (GIS, pole loading software such as PLS-CADD/POLE, etc.).\n\nSolid understanding of distribution line design principles, NESC/RUS compliance, construction standards, pole loading, and material assemblies.\n\nStrong problem-solving, coordination, communication, and documentation skills.\n\nAbility to mentor junior technical staff and contribute to standards, workflow improvements, and team development.\n\nWhat We Offer\nAt BHMG, we’re committed to raising the bar for what it means to work at an engineering and consulting firm. This position is eligible to earn additional compensation including extra effort pay and an annual bonus incentive based on individual and company performance. Career level and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
