Mechanic

MECHANIC JOB DESCRIPTION NATURE OF WORK This is a skilled position requiring the ability to work and perform as necessary in the routine maintenance and repairs of all mechanical items owned by the City. Must have a mechanical and automotive electrical background with the ability to adapt in unique ways as needed to perform maintenance on equipment ranging from diesel and/or gasoline automotive and construction equipment to gas powered weed eaters. Overall work assignment is performed under supervision of the Fleet Maintenance and Garage Superintendent. Work is reviewed through observation and checked for correct work methods and compliance with safety and work standards. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION This position is required to analyze problems on city equipment, to make repairs, assist others with repairs, as the need arises. This position is also required to take care of all shop equipment and tools and make sure that they remain in good condition. The position is also responsible for maintaining records, and/or accounting for, all repairs and routine services, such as, but not limited to; oil changes, filter changes, tire rotation and flat fixing, cleaning and washing of vehicles, etc. This position will also be on call for emergency repairs every third week and perform other duties as assigned. PHYSICAL ABILITIES The person in this position must have full use of body and extremities in order to perform intricate maintenance in hard to access areas. The following physical attributes are necessary to function in this position: 1. Hearing with the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication. 2. Vision with the ability to differentiate between colors and to work with very small components. 3. The ability to talk by expressing and exchanging ideas. 4. The ability of repetitive motions of the wrists, hand and/or fingers. 5. The ability to kneel, bending legs at the knee to come to rest on the knee or knees, or the ability to crouch, bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine. This is considered heavy work in that it occasionally requires the exertion of one hundred pounds of force for the accomplishment of some tasks and the work is performed both inside buildings and outside exposed to the elements. Applicant will occasionally encounter high noise environments and exposure to atmospheric conditions that could affect the respiratory system or skin. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Graduation from high school, or GED equivalent is required. Five years experience in diesel or gasoline mechanical equipment repair. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Applicant must possess a valid Texas CDL Drivers License.
