We use machine learning and microfluidics to quickly recognize the bacteria causing an infection and to predict which drugs will cure the infection.\nWe are seeking an experienced and entrepreneurial Controller comfortable in the startup, biotech environment to lead our accounting operations and continue scaling the financial infrastructure needed to support our growth. You will be responsible for leading and streamlining our core accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial records. Initially, this role will focus on hands-on accounting functions, especially the monthly close and key compliance activities, at ~20 hours per week. As the company grows, there will be opportunities to expand the scope of responsibility (e.g., systems build-out, cost accounting) and potentially convert to full-time with team leadership. This role is for you if you enjoy building processes, have a strong understanding of the application of finance and accounting principles in a startup, medical device environment, and are passionate about helping startups grow.\nHow You Will Contribute\nImmediate Priorities (fractional scope, ~20 hrs/week):\nOversee the company's accounting operations, including general ledger management, payroll, contractor-supported AP/AR, and tax filings\nComplete the monthly close process, performing the hands-on accounting to ensure timely and accurate financial statements and internal reports\nImplement and maintain internal controls and financial systems to ensure accuracy and compliance with US GAAP and other regulations\nEnsure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations and reporting requirements\nProactively research and resolve accounting discrepancies or anomalies to ensure accurate financials\nManage relationships with external auditors and enable a smooth audit process\nDrive the design of future-state accounting processes and systems (e.g., cost accounting, ERP improvements, commercialization readiness)\nOther Opportunities (as fractional scope permits):\nSupport management with financial reporting and insights, with the opportunity to expand into forecasting and operational analysis over time\nAssist in budgeting and forecasting as capacity allows\nSupport invoicing, project accounting, and audits for government contracts as needed\nContribute to the development of dashboards, consolidated reporting, and other financial tools as the business scales\nWe'd Love to Hear from You If You\nDesign, streamline, and communicate processes effectively\nExcel in tactical execution with strong attention to detail while maintaining a strategic, big picture vision\nOperate with integrity\nIdentify ways to remove operational friction and inefficiency, digging into problems and finding creative and compliant solutions\nAre flexible, adaptable, and comfortable moving through uncertainty to recommend and make decisions\nThrive in low-infrastructure, fast-changing environments where you switch regularly between areas of responsibility, priorities and levels of work (e.g., individual contributor tasks vs. directing others)\nUtilize strong data visualization and analytical skills to deliver insights\nCommunicate in written and oral formats in such a way that educates and clarifies\nLead teams effectively, either in-house or outsourced to deliver timely and quality outcomes\nFoster strong cross-department relationships and pursue collaborative buy-in around areas of conflict.\nEnjoy learning, practice curiosity and actively seek to grow\nDesired Education and Experience\nBachelor's degree in accounting or related field, CPA preferred, with 8-10+ years of progressive experience including leadership and management responsibilities and experience with startups\nExperience with cost accounting in a complex manufacturing environment\nThorough knowledge of US GAAP\nProficiency in general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process\nExperience with ERP systems (NetSuite preferred); ERP implementation experience a plus\nExperience with government contracts is a plus\nJoin us!
