CNC Mill Set-Up Operator
Employment Type: Full-Time | Non-ExemptReports To: Production Supervisor / Manufacturing ManagerTravel: Not ApplicablePosition SummaryResponsible for the setup, operation, and in-process inspection of CNC vertical and horizontal machining centers. Ensures precision-machined components meet engineering specifications while maintaining efficiency, quality, and process consistency.Key ResponsibilitiesProduction & OperationsSet up CNC VMC and HMC machines per drawings and job requirementsSelect and install cutting tools (end mills, drills, taps, reamers, etc.)Design and set up workholding (vises, clamps, fixtures, tombstones)Input, verify, and edit CNC programs (Fanuc, Siemens, Haas, Mazak, etc.)Set offsets (G54-G59), tool lengths, and cutter compensationPerform first-article runs and adjust programs/offsets for conformanceMonitor in-process dimensions and adjust for tool wear and variationExecute efficient job changeovers and maintain setup documentationQuality & InspectionInterpret engineering drawings and GD&T (ASME Y14.5)Perform inspections using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height gauges, and CMMVerify surface finish and thread qualityIdentify non-conformance and support corrective actionsMaintain records (setup sheets, SPC charts, inspection reports)Programming & Process ImprovementEdit or write CNC programs at the machine or via CAM softwareOptimize tooling, fixturing, and cycle times to improve efficiencySupport new job setups and process developmentDocument setups, tooling lists, and program revisionsMaintenance & SafetyPerform preventive maintenance (coolant, lubrication, cleaning)Monitor machine performance and report issuesMaintain 5S standards and organized work areaFollow safety protocols including PPE, LOTO, and machine guardingParticipate in lean and continuous improvement initiativesQualifications3+ years of CNC machining setup experience (VMC/HMC)Ability to read engineering drawings and GD&TStrong knowledge of G-code programming and editingExperience with workholding methods and fixture setupUnderstanding of cutting tools, speeds/feeds, and tool life managementProficiency with precision measuring tools (micrometers, CMM, etc.)Ability to work independently and manage multiple setupsPreferredExperience with Haas, Mazak, DMG MORI, Okuma, or Doosan machinesFamiliarity with CAM software (Mastercam, Fusion 360, etc.)Experience with 4-axis/5-axis machining and complex setupsKnowledge of advanced coolant systems and machining processesBackground in machining precision components (gears, shafts, housings)Apprenticeship or degree in CNC machining/manufacturingExposure to SPC, APQP, or PPAP processesWorking ConditionsManufacturing environment with exposure to noise, fluids, and machineryStanding for extended periods; lifting up to 50 lbsPPE required; possible overtime/weekend workCompensation & BenefitsHourly pay: $22 - $30/hr (DOE) + shift differentialMedical, Dental & Vision (Day 1 eligibility)401(k) with company matchPTO, holidays, and training programs
