Counselor

Title: CounselorDescription: Through leadership, advocacy, collaboration, consultation and systemic change, school counselors promote success for ALL students in the areas of academic development, college/career readiness and social/emotional learning. Services are implemented through a comprehensive school counseling program which includes delivery of core curriculum lessons, program management, student advocacy, small group and individual counseling.The school Counseling Program is aligned with the district's vision and mission statements and is delivered from a foundation of beliefs based on state and national standards that serve as the guiding principles for design and management.Qualifications:Valid Indiana School Counselor licenseSchool Counseling experience preferredTeaching experience preferredDemonstrated success in mediation relationship buildingDemonstrate knowledge of, and adhere to local, state, and federal policies, regulations, and laws pertaining to school counseling (e.g. privileged communication)Adhere to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Ethical StandardsDemonstrate knowledge of ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors and the Indiana Department of Education Program Standards for School CounselingPromote the mastery of the Indiana Department of Education Student Standards for School CounselingDemonstrate continuous personal growth and professional developmentDuties and Responsibilities:Must be able to work with students in small groups and individually in a confidential mannerGuide and counsel groups of individual students through the development of social and emotional intelligencesConfidentiality skills and good communication are necessaryAbility to collaborate and follow through on tasksMust be organized and have knowledge of community resourcesImplement the counseling curriculumConsult with teachers, staff and parents regarding the developmental needs of studentsRefer students with severe problems to appropriate community resources in consultation with their parentsMaintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulationAbide by state statues, school board policies and regulationsAssist administrators with the distribution and interpretation of standardized test scores for students and parentsAttend IEP and 504 meetings according to caseloadFacilitate informational evening sessions for parents regarding school goalsServe on committees as assignedAttend required meetings and training sessions as directedOther duties as assigned by building principal and/or supervisorData-Based Accountability:Annually revise the school counseling program as a result of analysis of evaluation dataIdentify data-informed annual goals along with the measured impact of direct services deliveryDeliver data-informed classroom, small-group and closing-the-gap activities and interventionsDesign calendars reflecting the appropriate use of time aligned with ASCA National Model recommendation of 80% of time in direct and indirect services to studentsCollect and analyze results data from classroom, small groups and closing-the-gap activities and interventionsMeasure student growth of outcome data areas, including academic achievement/grades, attendance, and behavior/disciplineClassroom Counseling Lessons:Design, deliver, evaluate and revise the Elkhart County School Counseling curriculum, including school-specific curriculum, meeting state and national standards for guiding student success including classroom lessons covering:Academic development (e.g. academic planning, student skills, test taking strategies, organizational strategies)Career development (e.g. college/career aspirations, awareness, exploration, and readiness)Social Emotional Learning (e.g. self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making)Student Counseling:As appropriate and aligned to ASCA Ethical StandardsIdentify counseling needs related to personal and social developmentProvide student assistance services, including individual and group counseling, crisis counseling and referrals, for students with personal or social concerns that interfere with learningProvide consultation to administrators, teachers, parents, and community agenciesCoordinate student assistance activities delivered by school counselors or others including teachers, peer and community mental health agenciesStudent Advocacy:Participate in and/or facilitate school improvement initiativesPromote high achievement and advocate for a supportive and rigorous learning environment for all studentsPromote an understanding and appreciation of various ethnicities and cultural groupsProvide assistance for teachers to help all students learnIdentify students who may not be achieving to their potential due to the learning environment and provide necessary supports and interventionsCollaborate with school and community partners to provide input and insight regarding the academic, social/emotional and behavioral progress of studentsProgram Management/Advocacy:* Seek and advocate for resources (time, funding, and personnel) to support students through the school counseling program* Promote school counseling program services to students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community membersWork Environment:The physical demands described here are
