Our mission is to provide outstanding personal service, safety, professionalism, and respect, while maintaining the highest level of integrity in partnership with the community.Previous experience/knowledge of law enforcement is desirable but is not required.Under general supervision, performs a variety of support duties as a non-sworn, non-peace officer in an assigned division of the Police Department; performs related clerical tasks; performs related duties as required.Some of the typical duties of the Part-time Community Services Officer include but are not limited to, the following:Operates a marked police vehicle enforcing parking laws and directing traffic; issues parking citations; performs traffic control; reports observed traffic hazards; initiates impound action on abandoned vehicles; assists stranded motorists; investigates minor injury and non-injury traffic collisions.Investigates and writes crime reports when no suspect is present; investigates complaints and cites violators; investigates, collects evidence, and writes reports on burglaries, thefts, malicious mischief, and other crimes; appears in court as required.Collects and preserves evidence in accordance with established procedures; may assist in the care, custody, and transport of prisoners; conducts jail bookings; photographs and fingerprints prisoners.Orders and maintains inventory of department property and supplies; performs a variety of clerical duties as assigned.Conducts crime prevention and community relations programs for neighborhoods, schools, and businesses; develops materials for presentations; writes articles, bulletins, educational booklets, and newsletters; responds to requests for information; assists with exhibits or station tours; makes presentations on crime prevention including bicycle safety, personal and home protection, and other areas.Collects, transports, processes and preserves evidence in accordance with established procedures.Processes a wide variety of police records, reports, and materials, including arrest reports, warrants, citations, crime and traffic reports, fingerprint cards, and vehicle storage and impound forms.Operates computer systems to enter, modify, and retrieve data such as stolen and recovered property, driver's license and vehicle registration information, warrants, and police reports; conducts record checks and researches files for requested information.Assists department personnel and the public in person and by phone; releases requested reports and related information to the public or to outside agencies in accordance with established regulations; provides general information regarding department policies, procedures, and regulations.Sorts, files, copies, and distributes crime reports, traffic reports, citations, and other records as appropriate; performs file searches to locate missing records; issues permits and licenses according to prescribed procedures.May perform matron duties in the absence of a female police officer; may supervise and care for infants and/or children awaiting transportation.May be assigned Crossing Guard supervisory duties and act as liaison for the city with the crossing guard contract company, in the absence of a Traffic Corporal. Education and Experience:Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be an Associate's degree or equivalent with major work in criminal justice, and two years of varied specialized clerical experience and public contact work.Knowledge and Skill Levels:Some knowledge of related department policies, rules, laws, codes, and regulations; report writing procedures; general office procedures. Skill in the operation of a variety of office equipment, including word processing software operation at a rate of 45 w.p.m.; perform data entry at a rate of 20 w.p.m.; and possess strong organizational and presentation skills. A Typing Certificate indicating 45 wpm and dated within the last year (12 months from your application date) is required to be submitted with your application. Completion of P.O.S.T. Community Service Officer training or equivalent (or ability to obtain training within one year of employment). Certification with the International Association of Property and Evidence is desirable for some positions. Must be 18 years of age at time of appointment. Must be free of felony convictions.The successful candidate must be willing and available to work weekends, holidays and nights on a routine scheduled basis.Part-time employees are not eligible for employee benefits but are subject to federal medicare employee contributions plus state and federal wage withholding provisions.
