We take a balanced, tailored approach to solving unique organizational challenges while leveraging industry best practices for long-term success.\nThis position supports a mission-critical federal enterprise integration environment undertaking a phased modernization from a legacy enterprise API gateway to a next-generation platform.\nPosition Overview\nJob Type: Full-Time\nLocation: Remote (U.S.) with occasional on-site meetings in the Washington, DC area\nTarget Salary Range: $140,000 – $165,000 / year (Note: Final offer is subject to candidate experience and expectations)\nPosition Contingency: Contingent upon contract award (Anticipated award: September 2026; Estimated start date: November 17, 2026)\nAs our Kong API Gateway Engineer, you will provide product-specific engineering for Kong enterprise API gateway capabilities, including plugin/policy development, routing, developer portal configuration, GitOps workflows, and supporting accelerated migration waves from legacy gateway products.\nKey Responsibilities\nKong Engineering: Implement, configure, integrate, validate, and troubleshoot Kong Enterprise and Kong Konnect components, plugins, policies, routes, certificates, and runtime groups.\nDeveloper Portal & Governance: Configure Kong developer portal capabilities, self-service onboarding integration points, and API catalog publications.\nAutomation & GitOps: Develop and maintain GitOps and configuration-as-code artifacts (e.g., decK) within Government-owned CI/CD environments.\nMigration & Dual-Run: Support migration wave preparation, test execution, defect resolution, rollback validation, and dual-run troubleshooting.\nTelemetry & Enablement: Integrate gateway telemetry and logging with monitoring platforms (Prometheus/AppDynamics/ELK) and conduct knowledge transfer sessions.\nQualifications & Requirements\nExperience:\nAt least 5 years of API platform or integration engineering experience.\nAt least 3 years of hands-on Kong (Kong Gateway Enterprise and/or Kong Konnect) experience in production environments.\nTechnical Expertise:\nStrong knowledge of Kong plugins, declarative configuration, decK, GitOps workflows, and OpenAPI specifications.\nAPI security integration: OAuth 2.0 / OIDC, mTLS, JWT validation, and rate limiting.\nKubernetes or OpenShift-based gateway deployment patterns.\nClearance & Security:\nMust possess U.S. work authorization.\nMust be able to obtain and maintain a federal Moderate Risk Public Trust (MBI level) background investigation.\nOur Hiring Process\nSubmit Application: Apply directly on Indeed with your updated resume.\nSalary & Contingency Confirmation: State your expected salary range and confirm your availability for a contingent start in November 2026.\nAlex AI Assessment: Complete an automated AI assessment interview through Alex AI.
