In this role, you will leverage your deep expertise in native Android development (Java/Kotlin) to build high-performance applications that interface directly with our custom hardware and IoT ecosystem. You will act as a technical pillar for the mobile team, bridging the gap between native Android environments and connected physical devices. If you excel at solving complex architectural challenges, optimizing mobile-to-hardware communication, and mentoring engineers, we want you on our team.\n\n*Key Responsibilities*\n\n* *IoT & Hardware Integration:* Design and implement robust, low-latency communication layers between our mobile applications and custom hardware components using protocols like Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Wi-Fi Direct, NFC, MQTT, or USB OTG.\n* *Architect and Build:* Design, maintain, and optimize high-performance, reusable code across both native Android (Java/Kotlin) and React Native environments.\n* *Technical Leadership:* Serve as a subject matter expert for Android development and hardware integration. Drive technical decisions, establish best practices for mobile architecture (e.g., MVVM, Clean Architecture), and enforce code quality through rigorous reviews.\n* *Performance Optimization:* Profile and optimize applications for speed, memory usage, and battery life, ensuring that background hardware communication does not degrade the user experience.\n* *Cross-Functional Collaboration:* Work closely with firmware engineers, hardware designers, product managers, and backend engineering teams to deliver robust, scalable connected solutions from conception to deployment.\n\n*Required Qualifications*\n\n* *Native Android Mastery:* Deep, extensive knowledge of Java and the Android SDK. Strong proficiency in Kotlin and modern Android development practices (Coroutines, Jetpack components).\n* *Hardware/IoT Expertise:* Proven track record of integrating Android applications with external hardware, connected sensors, or IoT devices. Experience with the Android Bluetooth/BLE stack, background processing, and connected device lifecycles.\n* *System Design:* Solid understanding of mobile system design, RESTful APIs, offline storage, concurrency, and performance tuning.\n* *Tooling & DevOps:* Experience with mobile CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Bitrise, GitHub Actions), Gradle, and automated testing frameworks (JUnit, Espresso, Jest).\n* *Version Control:* Expert-level proficiency with Git.\n\n*Work Requirements*\n\n* 5+ years of professional software development experience, with a primary focus on native Android development.\n* Must be based in the San Francisco Bay Area, preferably the North Bay.
