The role is within the Operations Finance team and focuses on improving operational performance through data-driven machine learning and automation.\r\nAbout The Role\r\nAs an AI & Machine Learning Intern, you will apply machine learning and automation techniques to operational datasets, supporting predictive analysis and workflow optimization across the network. This position requires on-site work at our Walnut Creek corporate office at least three days per week.\r\nWhat You'll Do\r\nIdentify manual operational tasks and explore automation opportunities\r\nBuild and test models to classify and analyze structured business data\r\nAnalyze operational performance data to identify efficiency patterns\r\nWork with planning and scheduling data to explore forecasting approaches\r\nReview operational metrics to detect bottlenecks or variability\r\nPresent clear, data-driven insights to internal stakeholders\r\nDevelop lightweight prototypes that reduce manual effort and can scale over time\r\nTranslate analytical models into practical solutions that support real-world decision-making\r\nYou Have These Skills\r\nProficiency in Python\r\nStrong analytical and problem-solving skills\r\nExperience with common data and machine learning libraries (e.g., pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn)\r\nUnderstanding of core machine learning concepts, including regression, classification, model evaluation, time series forecasting, and anomaly detection\r\nSelf-motivated and comfortable working in evolving or ambiguous problem environments\r\nInterest in applying machine learning to operational and business use cases\r\nAnd These Qualifications\r\nPursuing a bachelor's degree in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field\r\nPrior completion of basic accounting/tax courses required\r\nMinimum GPA of 3.0 or higher\r\nExtra Credit If You Have\r\nPractical experience with machine learning or AI projects\r\nGitHub, portfolio, or project examples demonstrating applied machine learning work\r\nThe hourly rate is posted for this position in California.\r\nAt Matson, we are looking for people to build a unified team to maintain our values of trust, integrity, and reliability.
