Senior Writer, Communications and External Affairs

The Senior Writer will conceive, research, and write a wide variety of communications products to advance Vera’s work for both traditional and digital media, including blog posts, articles, op-eds, multimedia scripts, fact sheets, policy briefs, reports, webpages, and other publications for a variety of audiences. The Senior Writer works with Vera’s editorial and program teams through the production process, including research, revisions, multiple rounds of editing, design, and dissemination strategy. The Senior Writer also serves as a liaison between Communications and Vera’s program teams and provides regular reports about strategies, goals, processes, and project updates. Responsibilities include researching and writing communications products focused on Vera’s work, collaborating with editorial and program teams through production, serving as liaison between Communications and program staff, keeping up with news cycles for relevant content ideas and rapid response work, working with people impacted by Vera's work to tell their stories, and helping define and develop messaging strategies around Vera’s issue areas. Other duties as assigned. Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, background in journalism, publishing, or communications, exceptional writing and editing skills, a record of published content, passion for criminal justice and immigration system transformation, collaboration skills, creativity, emotional intelligence, and project management skills. Preferred qualifications include 7+ years of writing experience. Technical knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, SharePoint, and Asana is helpful. The role reports to the Brooklyn, NY office with a hybrid schedule requiring about 10 days per month in-office. Compensation ranges from $95,000 to $98,000 with additional benefits including paid time off, health insurance, student loan repayment, professional development, retirement plan, and flexible time.
