The incumbent is experienced and has proficiency and broad knowledge of land surveying field work, data collection, Survey and CADD standards and practices, DPOR rules and regulations, local ordinances and processes as they pertain to the practice of land surveying, survey services, products and deliverables. The employee understands, abides, enforces, promotes, and innovates on the Standard Operating Procedures, Core Values and Principles of the Survey Department and the Company. They are also called on to assist the Survey Department Head with management, education and administrative duties of the department.Duties and Responsibilities:Verifies the accuracy of survey data including measurements and calculations taken at surveying sitesDirects or conducts surveys to establish legal boundaries for properties based on legal deeds and titles. Prepares or supervises the preparation of all data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to surveysCoordinates findings with the work of the engineering and architectural personnel, clients and others concerned with the projectsTrains assistants and helpers and directs their work in such activities as performing surveys or drafting mapsAnalyzes survey objectives and specifications to prepare survey proposals or to direct others in survey proposal preparationComputes geodetic measurements and interprets survey data to determine positions, shapes and elevations of geomorphic and topographic featuresDevelops criteria for survey methods and proceduresConducts research in surveying and mapping methods using knowledge of techniques of photogrammetric map compilation and electronic data processingRequired Skills and Abilities:Ability to direct the work of others and direct a projectAbility to problem solveAbility to comprehendAbility to effectively present information to othersAbility to calculate proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volumeAbility to apply concepts of basic algebra, trigonometry, and geometryAbility to carry out detailed instructionsIntermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite productsProficient in AutoCAD and other discipline specific software; uses software effectively to complete work efficiently and accuratelyHas appropriate level of knowledge of office and survey equipmentPhysical Requirements:The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk or hear, and climb or balanceThe employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawlThe employee regularly works in outside weather conditionsThe noise level of the work environment is usually moderateEducation and Experience:High school degree or the equivalentProfessional license in Virginia for the discipline representedValid Virginia driver’s license and a satisfactory driving recordProgressive experience as a survey instrument person, survey crew chief and related experience and/or trainingCompetencies Required:BudgetCommunicationCustomer ServiceDecision MakingEmployee DevelopmentEmployee ManagementInterpersonal SkillsLeadershipProject ManagementTechnical SkillsOther Duties:Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job.
