Today, completed panels are sourced from external vendors; by building this capability internally, we aim to improve quality, reduce lead times, and increase operational efficiency.\nBecause this is a new department, the individual hired for this role will have a unique opportunity to help shape its structure, processes, and long-term success from the ground up.\nThis position offers flexibility and will be tailored to the strengths and experience of the successful candidate:\nEngineering & Design Focus: Candidates with strong electrical design and drafting expertise may focus on panel engineering, electrical schematics, bill of materials (BOM) development, and technical documentation, while working alongside a dedicated production lead responsible for fabrication and assembly.\nEngineering & Production Leadership Focus: Candidates with both engineering knowledge and hands-on manufacturing experience may take ownership of the complete panel lifecycle, including design, assembly, testing, quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC), and coordination with procurement and suppliers.\nIn either capacity, you will collaborate closely with Engineering, Purchasing, and Operations to develop this new department and deliver high-quality control panels that meet customer specifications and industry standards.\nKey Responsibilities:\nPanel Shop Development\nEvaluate and recommend the equipment, tooling, and software needed to stand up an in-house electrical control panel fabrication operation.\nDevelop electrical panel drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or equivalent drafting tools.\nEstablish wiring standards, assembly procedures, and quality checkpoints for panel builds.\nCreate and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) for panel assemblies, coordinating with Purchasing on vendor selection and component sourcing.\nSupport or directly manage panel assembly, wiring, and functional testing depending on role configuration.\nBuild out QA/QC processes for completed panel assemblies, including inspection checklists and acceptance criteria.\nEngineering & Drafting\nProduce and maintain electrical drawings and panel layouts that support production and serve as the official record of as-built configurations.\nCollaborate with the Engineering team to align panel designs with broader product requirements and documentation standards.\nDevelop drafting templates and design standards that reduce rework and improve consistency across projects.\nTranslate customer specifications and engineering requirements into clear, buildable panel designs.\nProcurement & Operations Coordination\nPartner with Purchasing to develop an approved vendor list for enclosures, wire, terminals, circuit protection, and panel components.\nSupport inventory planning for shop consumables and stocked components.\nTrack shop throughput and flag capacity constraints or quality issues to leadership.\nPerform other duties as assigned.\nPerforms other duties as assigned.\nRequirements:\nRequired\n3+ years of experience in electrical panel design, controls engineering, electrical drafting, or hands-on panel assembly and wiring.\nWorking knowledge of electrical schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams.\nFamiliarity with NEC standards and common panel components, including PLCs, drives, relays, terminal blocks, circuit protection, and enclosures.\nAbility to read and interpret engineering drawings and customer specifications.\nStrong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a startup-style environment.\nPreferred\nAssociate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience.\nProficiency in AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or similar electrical drafting software.\nExperience standing up or reorganizing a production cell, shop, or department.\nExperience with ERP or MRP systems for BOM management and purchasing workflows.\nFamiliarity with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD tools is a plus.\nPhysical Requirements:\nRegularly required to work in a manufacturing shop environment, including exposure to noise, heat, and industrial equipment.\nMust be able to stand, walk, and work at a workbench for extended periods.\nAbility to lift up to 50 lbs. on occasion.\nProlonged computer use for design, documentation, and communication tasks.\nEqual Opportunity Employer/Minorities/Women/Veterans/Disabled\nTomball Controls is an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Employer.
